T Levels Week: From Darlington College to a career in play therapy! πŸ’™πŸ’š

When Paris joined Darlington College as one of our first T Level students, she was taking the first steps towards a future working with children. This year, she qualifies as a play therapist, putting the knowledge and experience gained through her studies into practice.

Looking back on her time at College, Paris says her T Level in Education and Childcare gave her the opportunity to grow both personally and academically, with supportive tutors, creative learning experiences and opportunities to make a difference.

From trips to the beach and farm to fundraising for Children in Need, volunteering in a hospital and developing professional interview skills, Paris gained experiences that helped prepare her for the next step: university.

Her T Level also helped her develop the independent learning, teamwork and confidence needed to progress onto a Level 6 course in Child Development and Playwork at university.

Her university studies have since opened up opportunities to explore how play can support children in a range of settings, including hospitals and early years environments.

Reflecting on her time at Darlington College, Paris said:
β€œI look back at my time in college and remember the fun and creativity that went into our education!”

We're incredibly proud to see how far Paris has come and wish her every success as she takes the next steps in her career.

Central Point became a hub of culture, heritage and identity last week, coming alive with the sights, sounds and flavours of Africa as we welcomed Taste Of Africa North East for a fantastic cultural showcase in support of Black History Month. πŸŒπŸ’™πŸ’š

From music, dance and drumming to African food, crafts, poetry and storytelling, our students enjoyed an immersive experience celebrating cultural diversity and bringing our college community together.

From the Ambulance to A&E – Exploring Careers in the NHS! πŸš‘ πŸ₯

Our T Level Health students recently enjoyed an immersive NHS careers experience at the Health and Social Care Academy, University Hospital of Hartlepool, discovering the wide range of professionals involved in patient care.

The interactive workshop followed the fictional story of Toby, a 14-year-old who suffered an ankle injury during a bowling trip. 🎳

Starting with an emergency ambulance response in the immersive suite, students followed Toby's journey through hospital, exploring how different departments and healthcare professionals work together to support his treatment and recovery.

Along the way, they met NHS professionals, discovered more about roles in paediatric A&E and dietetics, and explored areas including blood culture collection, radiography, fracture care, orthopaedics and occupational therapy.

It was a fantastic opportunity to see how classroom learning connects with real healthcare careers, while gaining valuable insight into the many different pathways available within the NHS.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in delivering such an engaging and informative experience for our students! πŸ’™πŸ’š

Could you be a lifesaver? πŸ’™πŸ’šπŸ©Έ

Darlington College welcomed Jean Harris, a volunteer with The Hero Project, to speak to our students about the life-saving work of Anthony Nolan and the importance of blood, stem cell and organ donation.

Students from Childcare, T Level Health and other curriculum areas learnt about the charity’s 50-year history and how stem cell donors can give people with blood cancer or blood disorders a second chance at life.

A particularly powerful moment came when Lexi, one of our T Level Health students, shared her own experience as a stem cell and organ donor, highlighting the incredible difference one person can make.

Now, we’re encouraging more of our students and staff to consider becoming lifesavers themselves! πŸ’™πŸ’š

πŸ“ Join us for our donor recruitment event this Thursday, 10.30am–1pm in Central Point.

The event is open to students and staff aged 16–30. Find out more about joining the stem cell donor register and how you could help save a life.

A little pampering with a big impact! πŸ’…πŸ’†β€β™€οΈ

Our Level 2 Nails students recently visited Home Instead [Darlington and Northallerton] dementia-friendly Memory Lane Activity Cafe, where they treated attendees to manicures, nail shaping and relaxing hand massages.

It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to put their skills into practice, chat with attendees and help create a welcoming, enjoyable experience for everyone. πŸ’™πŸ’š

A huge thank you to Home Instead for inviting our students along. Experiences like these help develop not only practical skills, but also the confidence and communication skills that are so valuable in the beauty industry.
