Our Interim Head, Dr Lucy Dean, recently spoke to the Perth Courier about the Perth Charterhouse Project, and the archaeological dig happening it mid-September, https://uhihistory.short.gy/cDh35B

The dig will take place on 14-20 September 2026 in the gardens of the King James VI Hospital Buildings, at the corner of Kings St and Hospital St (PH2 8HP).

The dig coincides with Archaeology Scotland's Archaeology Month and the Doors Open Days Festival, hosting two open days on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 September between 10am and 4pm. There will be walking tours, dig talks, family-friendly activities and a mini-exhibition.

The work is being supported financially by the King James VI Hospital and the Guildry Incorporation of Perth, and in collaboration with the Perthshire Society of Natural Sciences (PSNS).

We are very excited to share details on archaeological developments on the Perth Charterhouse Project, led by our Dr Lucy Dean in collaboration with Prof Richard Oram!

Following Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) scanning in 2024, the project’s first archaeological dig will take place in September 2026, making history by embarking on the first dedicated archaeological excavation in search of the Perth Charterhouse. The work is being supported financially by the King James VI Hospital and the Guildry Incorporation of Perth, and in collaboration with the Perthshire Society of Natural Sciences (PSNS) and the community of residents living on the site.

Congratulations to our Dr Philippa Woodcock who has been awarded a Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) Small Grant for her project, '"They Wept Together": Investigating Miscarriage, Taboo and Support in Early Modern Scotland'. The award is part of the RSE's Spring 2026 Research Awards programme, which is investing more than £661,000 in 61 innovative research projects across Scotland.

Building on work already supported by the Royal Historical Society and the Strathmartine Trust, the new RSE funding will enable Dr Woodcock to deepen understanding of how women, men and communities experienced miscarriage in early modern Scotland.

A University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) historian has secured prestigious funding from the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) to advance research into the emotional experience of miscarriage in early modern Scotland.

Our Dr Lucy Dean is one of the four main collaborating authors on a newly published Routledge Books textbook for students - Exploring Monarchy in Medieval Europe, 1000–1500 – along with Dr Elena Woodacre (founder of the Royal Studies Network), Dr Simon Lambe and Dr Patrik Pastrnak. The book also includes contributions from a host of other scholars for specialist spotlights and area study to make sure it encompasses Europe at its broadest extent.

They also worked with students as chapter reviewers, including some of our very own UHI Centre for History students. Huge thanks to all involved!
