While the Perth Charterhouse team are busy studying the findings from September's Dig Week, here is a recent BBC News article on an interesting fragment of masonry discovered during the dig.

The 18th Century culvert appeared to have been partly made using stone from the torn down monastery and was discovered at a grassy open space at the former King James VI Hospital.

We look forward to welcoming the authors of a brand new and wide-ranging textbook, Exploring Monarchy in Medieval Europe, 1000–1500. Dr Elena (Ellie) Woodacre (University of Wi******er), Dr Lucy Dean (UHI Centre for History) and Dr Patrik Pastrnak (Univerzita Palackého v Olomouci) will discuss the aims of the textbook and some of the key themes covered and comment on the process of putting together a volume with over 30 contributors and working with the assistance of wonderful volunteer student readers, which also included UHI students.

We are excited to share an update on our on-going collaboration with Penn State (PSU), hosting a summer school facilitated by Institute for Study Abroad.

The students taking part are all on a degree-level design programme at PSU and their course lead, Dan Marriott, has worked with collaborating institutions in London and Edinburgh, as well as UHI, to develop a summer programme abroad with a focus on designing solutions for local organisations, particularly in relation to climate change, sustainability, and tourism.

UHI Centre for History staff helped to facilitate relationships with local collaborators, and also provided regional history sessions to support the students in understanding the deep-rooted historical context in which modern heritage organisations function.

Huge congratulations to our alumnus, Sam Baillie, for winning UHI's Alumni of the Year award 2026!

Since graduating in 2017, Sam has been a keen supporter of UHI Centre for History, contributing to alumni blogs, teaching resources and online learning materials, as well as taking part in careers events to share his experience with current students to highlight the range of career opportunities available to humanities graduates.

We are so proud to have been part of Sam's journey, and are always excited to hear more about his work at SAMH (Scottish Action for Mental Health).

Congratulations again Sam from all of us, and here's to many future collaborations together!

Our Dr Philippa Woodcock was recently at Argyll Estates Archives, Inveraray Castle, to conduct further research for her Royal Society of Edinburgh funded project, '"They wept together": Investigating miscarriage, taboo and support in early modern Scotland.

Exploring the correspondence between Princess Augusta of Brunswick (1737-1813) and Elizabeth, the fifth Duchess of Argyll (c.1733-1790), Dr Woodcock discovered how the two women supported each other through the loss of children, exchanged gossip and plotted marriages for their surviving offspring.

Join us on Thursday 15 October, 7-8pm, for our next History Talks Live event, a book launch and conversations with the authors of brand new and wide-ranging textbook, Exploring Monarchy in Medieval Europe, 1000–1500, co-authored by four members of Royal Studies Network (RSN), who came together to provide a comprehensive introduction to monarchy across the fullest extent of Europe in the Middle Ages.
