Freemasonry isnt just for making friends, it’s also about making a difference in our local communities and making good men better 🌟

"Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

In this age of social media, where much of our interaction exists online, real conversations are becoming rarer. Freemasonry gives men a place to speak, listen, be heard, and contribute to something greater than themselves.

Everyone knows that good conversation brings people together and builds strong friendships and one of the major benefits of Freemasonry is the opportunity to spend time with like minded people, make friends, and socialise at one of our regular meetings, but that’s not all!

Our meetings and events can also provide a unique opportunity to develop your public speaking, work within a team, and build your soft skills. These skills are not just useful from a social standpoint.

Skills such as communication, problem solving, adaptability, and leadership all have tremendous carryover into our daily lives. They can improve your personal relationships, provide new opportunities, and are especially useful in the workplace, where employers increasingly value skills such as emotional intelligence and time management.

Personal development is a big part of Freemasonry, and it has long been proven to be one of the best avenues to personal fulfilment, improved self esteem, better mental health, and resilience.

Many Freemasons know this from experience, and the best part? This is just one aspect of Freemasonry; there are so many more to explore.

For many of us, our journey as Freemasons began with simply plucking up the courage to start the conversation. So if you have any questions, just ask!

Freemasonry: bringing people together for over 300 years!

What kind of people does Freemasonry attract?

Well, there isn’t just one type. Our organisation brings together a diverse range of individuals who might never otherwise meet.

There are Freemasons aged from 18 to over 100. There are veterans, emergency service workers, retirees, doctors, plumbers, pilots, builders, teachers, sailors, and many others.

There are people of all races, from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds. Christians, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Vegans, Pescatarians, Conservatives, Liberals, Homosexuals, Heterosexuals and the list goes on, and on.

In fact, there are over 170,000 Freemasons across the UK, and we all have unique backgrounds and beliefs! Yet, despite all of our differences, we always find plenty in common with our fellow members, and we all found our place in Freemasonry,

Our organisation brings like-minded people together to make a positive difference in our respective communities. We support one another, help each other improve, make lasting friendships and contribute to good causes.

Freemasons understand that although we are all different, we are all equal, and Freemasonry is open to anyone of good character who wants to make a difference.

We warmly welcome anyone’s interest in our wonderful community, and we love sharing the many positive aspects of Freemasonry with others. So, if you have any questions, just ask!

The mysteries of Freemasonry are revealed! 👁

Let's explore some common questions about Freemasonry!

Many people refer to Freemasonry as ‘a secret society’, but is that really the truth?

The answer is: no, not really.

Masonic meeting places are openly marked on public maps, members share their stories openly, and much of our history, activities, and charitable efforts are available for everyone to see on this page and others like it.

Of course, like many modern organisations, we do keep some details private. Such as parts of our ceremonies and signs of recognition. This is less about secrecy and more about safeguarding the special experience of becoming a Freemason for new members.

Every modern organisation issues staff ID cards, right? We use more traditional methods of identification for our members. One example is the ‘secret handshakes’, we actually call them ‘grips’.

These date back to medieval times, when operative stonemasons used them as a form of identification; they were a solution to a problem that predated modern certification. In an era when literacy was rare, they had to find ways to prove their level of skill. So they used various grips to prove the level they had achieved, which was important as they were paid based on that level!

Today, these grips are a proud tradition that we still maintain as a link between Freemasonry and its historic roots in operative stonemasonry.

Every year, Freemasons help thousands of good causes right across the UK, and even a few international ones!

The Freemasons' Charity shows off the huge impact our combined efforts can make in the places where it matters most, and Freemasons contribute to these efforts every single day.

Charity and Service are both major parts of the spirit of Freemasonry. We enjoy making friends, making an impact and making a difference, and we do it together!

Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Service.

There’s no better way to spend time than amongst friends!

This is what Freemasonry is all about. Making a difference, together!

Friendship starts here!

Do you know why Freemasons call each other Brother?

Well, it comes from the friendship and sense of belonging that develops between members.

As Freemasons, we are united as one big family, and that’s why we call each other Brothers. It means supporting each other through the good times and the bad ones, and knowing that whoever you meet in Freemasonry, you always have something in common.

We are never short of options for a day or an evening in good company. There are always plenty of opportunities to make friends, meet new people, or get involved in something that helps those less fortunate or supports a good cause.

There’s also the East Kent Light Blues Brothers, which provides an even greater opportunity to meet new members from across East Kent, visit other masonic centres, attend social and educational events, build friendships and gain a wider experience of being a Freemason.

Friendship is, after all one of the main things that Freemasonry is all about!

Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Service.

So, if you’ve ever been curious about what we do, you can find out more on the East Kent Freemasons website!

Have you ever wondered what happens during a Masonic Ceremony?

Freemasonry is often called a “secret society,' but in reality, we don’t keep many secrets.

That said, Masonic ceremonies are a special aspect reserved for members, but we’re happy to share a general idea.

Masonic ceremonies are meaningful occasions for Freemasons, and we hold them with great respect. They are among our most cherished traditions and can sometimes be misunderstood.

The ceremonies are a series of moral lessons rooted in Aristotelian ethics and Enlightenment-era values, passed down through generations of Freemasons since at least the 1700s. Today, our members continue to memorise, perform, and pass them along just like those before them!

The lessons are brought to life through engaging theatrical plays. Freemasons take a lot of pride in their ceremonies, often practising for weeks beforehand to ensure they perform their best on the day.

It's only after the initiation that you truly realise how much effort goes into ensuring each candidate gains a meaningful experience and is treated with the dignity and respect that such a significant moment in their Masonic journey deserves.

Lots of conspiracy theories still exist around these ceremonies; the fact is, there is nothing religious about them, and there’s no worshipping of anyone or anything involved.

Freemasonry is definitely NOT a religion.

There are no goats or demons (do we really need to state this? Unfortunately, yes.)

As Freemasons, we all have our own beliefs, faiths and personal views. We welcome people from diverse backgrounds, and neither religion nor politics is permitted as a subject of discussion inside a Freemasons' lodge. Talk of either matter is strictly discouraged due to the potentially divisive nature of each.

It’s for this reason that our ceremonies are entirely secular; they are purely a series of ethical lessons intended to encourage self-reflection and self-improvement and are in no way associated with Esotericism, Gnosticism, or any related belief systems.

Explore the wonderful world of Freemasonry! 🌍

Why do people decide to become Freemasons?

This is a question with many different answers because each of us has a unique story, individual backgrounds, beliefs, and personal challenges or even limitations!

With around 170,000 Freemasons in the UK, everyone’s reason is a little different.

Some enjoy the social side, making friends, sharing interests with like-minded individuals, or just enjoying the company of decent people and a good meal.

Others are drawn to the charitable work, wanting to contribute to meaningful causes or be part of something bigger. To help out and make a difference in their local area. More of that here --> The Freemasons' Charity

Many seek a new sense of purpose or community, especially those who miss the camaraderie they had in the military or other services.

And this is not even a comprehensive list! There’s so much to explore with Freemasonry that it’s just too much to fit in a single post.

So, we will share more in the next update.

In the meantime, if you're curious to learn more about Freemasonry, visit the East Kent Freemasons website, or for those outside East Kent, take a look at the United Grand Lodge of England website for more information.

The four guiding principles of Freemasonry 😁

The four guiding principles of Freemasonry 😁

Have you heard of the four most important values in Freemasonry?

Integrity, friendship, respect and service.

Integrity means keeping your word, being true to your principles and doing the right thing, even when it's difficult or unnoticed. It's about honesty, accountability and the courage to accept when you get it wrong.

Friendship is about meeting new people, forming bonds with like-minded individuals, and supporting those around you. It means taking a genuine interest in other people's welfare and supporting each other, even through tough times.

Respect is about recognising that everyone has inherent value; we all have different strengths, weaknesses, beliefs, and opinions, and all are equally valid. Our diversity is our strength, and everyone has the right to be heard and feel valued.

Service is the heart of Freemasonry. It’s about using your time, resources, or skills to help others without making personal recognition the primary objective. It‘s about coming together to offer practical help where it's needed most.

These four principles guide our daily lives as we work together to become the best we can be and support those in need.

So, whether it’s meeting new people, learning new skills, helping out in the community, or simply enjoying good company, Freemasonry has something for everyone.

Freemasonry is sometimes misunderstood.

Some people are curious. Some are sceptical. Some have heard rumours or formed opinions based on things they have seen online. That is understandable.

Like any organisation with history, tradition and private meetings, people will sometimes have questions and the way we answer those questions is of the utmost importance.

The best approach is not to argue, mock, or become defensive. It is to listen first, understand what the concern is, and respond calmly in ordinary language.

Freemasonry is not a political organisation. It is not a religion. It does not replace anyone’s faith, and it does not tell people how to vote or what to think.

At its heart, Freemasonry is about bringing people together around positive values: integrity, friendship, respect and service.

It gives members the chance to build lasting friendships, support charitable causes, serve their communities, and reflect on the kind of person they are trying to become.

Yes, Freemasonry has private traditions. Many organisations do.

You cant enter your work premises without an ID card, right?

Well, Freemasonry emerged in a time before such devices. So, we still use handshakes. Its not as deep as some would have you believe.

Privacy does not automatically mean secrecy in a sinister sense, that is just paranoia, largely driven by people's natural fear of the unknown.

Still, its a fact that our meeting places are known and visible, our values are public, our charitable work can be seen over on The Freemasons' Charity page, and many members are open about being Freemasons.

So, people can speculate and guess or they could just go and talk to their local freemasons. They would be delighted to tell you the many positive things about freemasonry, they might even show you around their lodge.

What matters most here, is not proving ourselves with words or arguments, its our conduct. The best way to answer criticism is not by winning an argument online.

It is by being decent, respectful, charitable and visibly active in the community. It is by showing, through actions, what Freemasonry is really about.

Not everyone will agree with Freemasonry, and that is fine. People are entitled to their own views. But it is reasonable to ask that Freemasonry be judged on what it actually is, not on rumours, stereotypes or conspiracy theories.

Freemasonry brings people together, encourages personal growth, supports good causes, and gives members a practical way to contribute to society.

This is ultimately, the message we should be sharing.
