Join local goose expert Dr Larry Griffin for an informal evening exploring the lives of the wild geese that make Dumfries & Galloway their home each year.

From traditional metal and brightly coloured leg rings to modern GPS trackers that let us follow their movements from our phones, the ways we observe geese have changed dramatically. But what can these rings, pings and sightings actually tell us about their lives, journeys and the challenges they face?

With stories, photographs and a presentation drawn from a lifetime of working with and following geese, Larry will share what he’s learned along the way.

In Borneo, a young orangutan was rescued with scorched hands and feet after running across a burning forest floor. Fueled by a powerful El Niño, the fires have burned roughly two million acres across Indonesia, with active fires affecting more than half of orangutan habitat. But conservationists remain hopeful, especially after several orangutans were spotted taking refuge near a river and others are recovering in rehabilitation centers.

For some sea otters, rocks aren’t just random stones they happen to find. They can choose one and carry it around in a small pocket of skin located beneath their forearm.
They use this rock as a tool to crack open shells. They place it on their stomach, then hold a shellfish between their paws and repeatedly slam it against the rock until the shell breaks.
And the most surprising part is that some otters seem to have their own habits and may regularly reuse the same rock. In other words, they can carry their little tool with them for a long time, which is why researchers sometimes refer to them as having “favorite rocks.”CARROUSEL (1080 x 1440 px) (33).png
