SRUC Barony Campus - based near Dumfries - delivers College and University level courses

Wildlife and Conservation Management students from all cohorts spent two days with Borders Forest Trust in the Moffat hills where they were involved in the native woodland regeneration project.

They spent time setting mammal traps, managing recently planted trees and exploring the area for biodiversity monitoring. Some students even chose to camp out for the evening, chilling out round the campfire and braving the particularly soggy Scottish weather from their tents!

Agriculture students from our Barony, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen came together at the Aberdeen campus to meet one another and work alongside their new colleagues on projects in Agriculture Communications and Climate Change Solutions. This is 1 of 3 scheduled residentials this year where new relationships are made to hopefully last a lifetime.

SRUC Barony campus teamed up with Wallace Hall Academy, Primary and ELC and Farmstrong Scotland to bring together HNC Agriculture students with Wallace Hall S4-6 students for a day of learning and wellbeing focused activities.

The morning was filled with a visit to Nether Dargavel farm where the group were given a tour of the farm by the Carlisle family. In the afternoon on return to Barony campus students were split into groups to visit activity stations that included welding with Barony engineers, autosteer demo with Gordons Agricultural Equipment, a visit to Dairy Nexus, a discussion with Farmstrong Scotland and a competition on the Agriculture teams assault course.

It was a great day that saw the students mixing together and learning together for the future in agriculture. Many thanks to all involved.

“SRUC gave me the opportunity to build on my farming background, gain valuable industry experience and develop the knowledge and confidence to pursue a career in agriculture.”

Stella Hill’s early experiences of life on a family farm sparked her interest in agriculture and inspired her to find out more about the industry.

During her degree, Stella enjoyed combining classroom learning with practical experience, including farm tours and visits to agricultural businesses across Scotland.

She said: “The farm tours gave us the chance to see a wide range of farms and businesses, which gave us lots of ideas for the future. If you’re interested in agriculture, it’s a great way of learning much more in depth while also getting your foot in the door.”

“Don’t be discouraged whether you do or don’t come from a farming background.”

Growing up on her family’s hill-based beef and sheep farm on the Isle of Islay, Morven Brown was involved in all aspects of farm life from an early age.

Her long-term ambition is to manage her own agricultural business, using the skills and knowledge she has gained through her studies and industry experience.

Morven said: “I chose to study at Barony Campus because I liked the idea of being able to study on a rural campus based on a working farm. This course is for everyone. There is such a diverse range of modules that everyone can learn something and take something valuable from it.”
