🧑‍💻 Technology is shaping the future, but girls remain underrepresented in many areas of the sector.

The TechFirst Girls' Competition aims to help change that.

Open to girls aged 12-13 across the UK, the free online competition introduces participants to cyber security, artificial intelligence, semiconductors and quantum technologies through a series of fun and engaging challenges. No previous technical knowledge or coding experience is required.

Girls can take part individually or as part of a team, developing problem-solving skills while discovering the exciting opportunities that a career in technology can offer.

Mental Health Nurse Adviser

Are you a registered Mental Health Nurse looking for a role where you can make a real difference to students' lives? Join our Student Support Service and help provide therapeutic support, mental health guidance and wellbeing initiatives for students at Abertay.

🔔 Closing date: Monday 19 October
📍 Dundee
🗓️ 17.5 hours per week

As our Mental Health Nurse Adviser, you'll:
⭐ Provide therapeutic support for students experiencing mental health difficulties
⭐ Play a key role in coordinating support and responding to wellbeing concerns
⭐ Work closely with colleagues and external agencies to deliver effective support
⭐ Promote positive mental wellbeing across the University community
⭐ Help increase mental health awareness among students and staff

🌍 How can a Master's project help tackle a real-world sustainability challenge?

For MSc Geotechnical Engineering student Emir Tashbaev, it meant working with Dundee engineering company RADIX to develop a carbon calculator capable of measuring the whole-life embodied carbon of foundation systems.

Using real-world case studies, the research found that RADIX screw pile foundations had a lower overall carbon impact than equivalent concrete solutions, while providing the company with a practical tool to support future projects.

The collaboration has helped RADIX better compare the environmental impact of different foundation options, while giving Emir the opportunity to apply his expertise to a live industry challenge with real-world value.

Congratulations to Dr Muhammad Ahmed Saeed, PhD on winning the Digital Health & Care Innovation Centre (DHI) Award at the 2026 Converge Awards👏

Ahmed's award-winning project, Bottleneck Explorer, is helping healthcare teams better understand patient demand, identify system pressures and make more informed decisions about service delivery.

Developed through collaboration between healthcare, design and data researchers, and co-designed with NHS staff, the tool demonstrates how innovative research can help tackle real-world challenges and improve outcomes across the NHS.

Humanities research comes to life in Dundee this November as Abertay University and the University of Dundee hosts two free events as part of Being Human Festival 2026.

Taking place at CoSTAR Realtime Lab at Water's Edge, the events will explore the connections between storytelling, games, comics, screenwriting and emerging technologies through engaging discussions and creative activities.

One event will feature the launch of a free comic showcasing work from staff and students across Dundee, including contributions from Abertay colleagues, while the second brings together experts to discuss writing for the screen in the 21st century.

Being Human Festival is the UK's national festival of the humanities, with more than 230 events taking place in 38 towns and cities from 5 to 14 November.

More than 50 pupils from schools across Tayside got hands-on with the future of technology at Abertay University as part of the 2026 Ada Scotland Festival 🎮

From practical workshops and industry talks to a careers fair and conversations with current students, the Dundee Schools Hub Games and Cyber Day gave pupils the chance to explore the many routes into games, computing and cyber security.

The event is part of our work to encourage greater diversity in technology, helping young people build confidence, explore new possibilities and see a future for themselves in the sector.

From Dundee to the international stage 🌍⚽

Abertay graduate Kurt Herd is making headlines after becoming manager of Dominica's national men's football team, making him the only Scot currently in charge of an international men's side.

After leaving Abertay and heading to Australia to begin his coaching career, Kurt's path has taken him across the globe. Today, he's leading a national team more than 4,000 miles from home.

BBC Sport Scotland recently caught up with Kurt to discuss his career and the challenges of managing a national side as Dominica look to climb the international rankings.
