💻 How do people navigate digital systems, make decisions online and interact with AI platforms?

These are some of the questions being explored through a new international research partnership between Abertay University and OTH Regensburg in Germany.

Using eye-tracking technology, researchers led by Dr Lynsay Shepherd and Prof Juergen Mottok are studying how users engage with software and digital environments, generating insights that could help shape the next generation of digital tools.

The findings could help improve the design of technologies across areas including cybersecurity, accessibility, software development and games.

🎮 💻 The next generation of creative and tech talent was on show on Friday at this year's MSc Games and Cyber Showcase.

Across the Abertay cyberQuarter and CoSTAR Realtime Lab, postgraduate students presented a diverse range of projects spanning artificial intelligence, user experience, ethical hacking, cybersecurity, games development, technical art and visual effects.

The showcase provided an opportunity for students to share their work with industry partners, academics and fellow students, demonstrating the skills, creativity and technical expertise developed throughout their studies.

Congratulations to all of our MSc students on the quality of work on display. We look forward to seeing the impact they make across the digital and creative sectors in the years ahead. 👏

🎮 A game that began life as a third-year project at Abertay University has now been released to players worldwide.

Forest of Deceit, developed by Ghost Camp, has launched on major platforms including Steam, PlayStation and Xbox after first emerging through DARE Academy in 2019.

The game originated as a student concept at Abertay before being developed through DARE Academy and showcased at EGX. Seven years later, the team has transformed that original idea into a commercially released title reaching players around the world.

🎮 Last night's release of the Grand Theft Auto VI trailer on Netflix put the spotlight back on one of gaming's most remarkable success stories.

Long before it became a global phenomenon, Grand Theft Auto was being developed in Dundee. The original game was created by DMA Design, co-founded by Abertay alumnus Dave Jones, before growing into one of the world's most successful entertainment franchises.

1997 saw two major milestones for Dundee: the launch of Grand Theft Auto and the creation of Abertay University's computer games degree, the world's first. Together, they helped cement the city's reputation as a centre of excellence for games development.

Nearly 30 years on, it's incredible to see the series continuing to reach new audiences around the world. Congratulations to all the Abertay alumni who played a role in bringing the latest game to life 👏

👏 Congratulations to three Abertay academics who have been named among the newest members of the Royal Society of Edinburgh's Young Academy of Scotland programme.

Dr Mona Bozdog, Dr William Kavanagh and Dr Dan Warrender are among just 48 new members joining the prestigious network of emerging leaders, which brings together talented people from across Scotland to tackle some of society's most pressing challenges.

Their appointments recognise the impact of their work across games, technology, health and social change, and reflect the University's commitment to research that makes a difference.

💕 A love story that began at Abertay more than 20 years ago is creating new opportunities for future students.

Katrina Henderson has established a £5,000 bursary for neurodivergent students in memory of her late husband, Roy, a much-loved member of the University's Security Team.

Abertay was a big part of their lives. Katrina studied here in 2001, where she met Roy. He later proposed outside our Kydd Building and went on to spend 25 years working at the University, becoming a familiar and valued presence on campus before his death last year.

Now, Katrina has returned to the place that meant so much to them both to create a lasting tribute to Roy's kindness, his passion for gaming and computing, and his commitment to supporting others.

Come along and play innovative new games, meet the student teams behind them, and experience first-hand the creativity, collaboration and technical skills developed through Abertay's flagship games design competition.

Following the showcase, DCA will host the DARE Academy Awards Ceremony, where the 2026 winner will be announced.
