Meet our Representatives!

Izzy - LGBT+ Rep

Foundation Year Psychology

How would you describe your role?
I’m the LGBT+ Rep, so I’m here to support and represent our LGBTQIA+ community through my position on the Welfare Representation Committee, weekly drop-ins, socials (fun events where everyone can meet up and chat), and just being a friendly face around college!

What is the best bit about your role? Helping people! Uni is a big change, and a lot of people use it as an opportunity to be their true selves, it’s really wonderful to be able to help in that.

What is your favourite thing about John’s?
That everyone is loved and accepted, we work really hard against hate and bigotry!

Do you have any advice?
Be loud and be proud! 🏳️‍🌈

An interesting fact about you?
I am currently collecting small dinosaurs that grow in water.

What is your favourite John’s event? The LGBT+ Gayking (Gay Baking) event at the start of this term, it was great fun.

Meet our Catering and Conference Manager - Alison!

If you could outline your role at John’s in a sentence, what would you say?
My job as Catering and Conference Manager is to provide a professional catering service to students, staff, visitors and conference guests.

What is your favourite place around college?
The College gardens

Where do you recommend people visit in Durham?
I would recommend people visit the Cathedral

Do you have a favourite day during the academic year at John’s?
Graduation Week

What is your favourite type of potato at John’s? Baked potato, less calories

When did you come to Johns and how has it changed since you have been here?
First day at St Johns College 19th August 1991. I have seen numerous changes: increase in termly Formals, MCR formals introduced, style of catering and menus offered to students, increased numbers in students as The Garth was built and houses in the Bailey rented for students/post grads, more accommodation was built St Margaret’s, the Orangery extension to the Haughton Dining Room and full refurbishment of Haughton Dining Room servery and dishwasher area.

What is something unique to Johns?
The friendship offered at College, as one of the smaller colleges I got to know the students through the weekly Operational teams and working with the various groups for the Bailey Ball, weekly Formals, Post Grad Formals, Christmas and Leavers Formals, Health and Safety meetings, basically any catering related query or dietary issue I would be involved in a meeting.

Meet our Representatives!

Em - Disability Representative

Second Year Sociology and Anthropology (with a year abroad)

How would you describe your role?
My role as disability rep has two main parts. We run drop-ins for any students. This allows any students who want to chat to talk and be referred to the right places if they need. We run disability events. This year they have mostly been social media takeovers but hopefully next year there can be more in-person stuff!

What is the best bit about your role?
Being able to represent disabled people in a positive way whilst positively contributing to the diversification and inclusivity of college life.

What is your favourite thing about Johns?
The community – we are honestly like one big family.

Do you have any advice?
Just be yourself and then great things will follow. Also, if you need help, because university is a big change for everyone, don’t be scared to ask.

An interesting fact about you?
I am slightly hypermobile in my joints and often put my fingers into weird positions without realising it. (fun or grim you decide!)

What is your favourite John’s event?
My favourite Johns event is probably Bailey Ball. Honestly can’t put into words how amazing it was! My favourite event which I organised was the Instagram takeover of welfare to raise awareness of disability at Christmas. We got such a good response and a few interesting questions to answer.

Here is Mae to explain about the escape room for our first events evening!!

It’s on the 12th of March - there will be an escape room activity (there are limited spaces, so make sure you sign up ASAP!), but also for those who don’t fancy an escape room we have Pictionary, a Q and A/chill out zone, and there will be a quiz (with voucher prizes!)

Get to know one of our Porters - Judith!!

If you could outline your role at John’s in a sentence, what would you say?
Working in the Reception Office. Ensuring the happiness and wellbeing of all our students during their time at St Johns.

What is your favourite place around College?
The Ampitheatre with its gorgeous view down to the river. The Tristram Room with all its elegance.

Where do you recommend people visit in Durham?
Take the Prince Bishops Boat Cruise down the river on a sunny day. Its lovely !

What is your favourite book?
Any books by LJ Ross or Peter James, both are detective writers who base their stories around the UK.

What tip would you give a prospective student to getting their University career off to the best start here at Johns?
Get involved. Johns has so much to offer!

Whose job would you like to have at Johns instead of your own?
No ones. I love my current job and the interaction with both students and staff.

Do you have a favourite day during the academic year at Johns? Fresher’s Week for me is the best. Meeting the new students and helping them to adjust to life in Durham and at Johns. I’m always happy to chat and learn more about the students. I hope this makes them feel that Johns is their home away from home.

What is your favourite type of potato at Johns?
Must be the Duchess Potatoes. Yummy !

When did you come to Johns and how has it changed since you have been here?
18 months ago. It just keeps getting better and better.

What is something unique to Johns? The hidden stair cases.

Why would you come to Johns if you were a student?
It is a small, friendly environment and the staff take a keen interest in all the students.

What has surprised you about life in Johns this year?
We are all part of the Johns Family. Once a Johnian always a Johnian.

Who is another staff member or team that you could not do your job without?
The lads in my team, John, Paul, Steven and the Senior Tutors Office.

If you had a spirit animal, what would it be and why? A Black Cat, contrary to some beliefs, they are not bad luck. Cats have nine lives. I have a black cat whom I adore called Kitten.
