āĻŽāĻžāϤ⧃āĻāĻžāώāĻž āĻĻāĻŋāĻŦāϏ (read: Matri Bhasha Dibash), also known as Mother Language Day in annually celebrated on the 21st of February. This day promotes multi-linguistic abilities and different cultures. It was recognised by the Bengalis of then East Pakistani Bengalis, now known as Bangladeshi Bengalis to commemorate the day of the protests held for recognition of Bangla as a national language. Indian Bengalis massively celebrate the same as the two very different cultures still share the same language with different dialects. This day is also observed as Language Martyrs’ Day (āĻļāĻšāĻŋāĻĻ āĻĻāĻŋāĻŦāϏ) in Bangladesh, to pay respect to those killed during the protests.

The more languages you know, the better you see the world! Happy International Mother Language Day!

Happy International Mother Language Day/ Language Martyrs Day/ Ekushy February!

This marks 71 years since the Language movement, commemorated with the decorating of the Shaheed Minar (Martyr Monument). Today we are left with a bittersweet feeling of celebrating the freedom to speak Bangla, whilst mourning and paying tribute to those who lost their lives to be able to speak our mother tongue.

Context:
After đŸ‡ĩ🇰 initially separated from đŸ‡ŽđŸ‡ŗ it composed of various ethnic and linguistic groups, with the Easterly Region being mainly Bengali. Although more than half of the people in ‘East Pakistan’ spoke Bangla, the government declared Urdu as the sole language in 1948. The language movement (Bhasha Andolôn) which took place on the 21st of February 1952 was when students in Dhaka university protested to have the Bengali language recognised in East Pakistan (Bangladesh). Many students, teachers and leaders risked their lives during the protest which sadly resulted in 6 deaths and many casualties. After years of conflict, the government relented and granted official status to the Bengali language in 1956.
Now, the Bangla language remains the sweetest and sixth most spoken language in the world.

Maa (Maternal Aid Association) is a charity that works to prevent maternal mortality. Maa’s own opening chapter was brought by the unnecessary death of a mother and her child when the founder of Maa witnessed her bleeding to death after a failed Cesarean birth. This sparked the foundation of Maa in 2016 and since then 35+ Societies across universities in the UK dedicate February to fundraise and raise awareness for Maa (Maa Month).

We hope you can join us in our charity bake sale on the 20th Feb outside the SU where you can donate. You can also find out more about the charity here: https://maacharity.org/maamonth
