Former Foundation student Bruna Pearson describing her journey from failing maths to a PhD

As part of British Science Week, here's a fantastic blog post from Dr. Bruna Pearson, originally written for Beyond Science, which worked to encourage young people to get involved in science.

DCAD is one! It is a year since the Foundation Centre became the Foundation Programme and joined the new Durham Centre for Academic Development. It has been an eventful year, but one that has seen many students successfully complete the Foundation Programme and move on to their own departments, alongside former Foundation students who have graduated from their degrees at Durham Cathedral. We are looking forward to the completion of the new Centre for Teaching and Learning where some of our DCAD colleagues will be based and welcoming new Foundation students in the autumn.

Something to get involved in.... when the rain stops 😂

From Stone Age rock art to the World Heritage Site of Durham Castle and Cathedral, the North East of England has a religious heritage to rival anywhere in the world.

For those who don’t know, it’s rather wet out there 😂 please take care when out and about!

Due to the continuing rain fall a number of roads around the county have become flooded. Motorists are advised to take extra care and allow extra time on their journeys. At the time of writing all main roads remain open

We had a lovely time this afternoon celebrating the end of the year with our current Foundation students and several students who have progressed to year one and beyond - some are now Durham graduates! Former students from across a number of departments came to pass on their wisdom of moving up to year one, including advice about module choice, being strategic, asking questions, getting involved in societies and generally enjoying it (while working very hard, obviously!).

We also had several activities relating to transitioning from Foundation to year one, including a talk for students in heritage related subjects from staff in the Archaeology Dept. and a chat with a Theology graduate who works in the heritage sector and at Durham Cathedral. It was lovely to hear about the Ice & Fire rescue archaeology project on Eston Hills that is run by former Foundation student Adam Mead. There are opportunities for students (and anyone else) to get involved. Lots of former Foundation students (and staff) have been involved in the past.
