Here’s a podcast we think our community will enjoy. A member of DSEP’s exec team last year, Patrick recorded an episode with Prof. Mehmet Austay of our very own Durham University. Prof. Austay specialises in Islamic economics and this podcast explores this topic. Here is the summary:

“From biotech to autonomous vehicles, the current rate of technological change is breath-taking. This speed is not, however, matched in broader conversations about their ethical, political, and legal implications, which lag far behind. Those discussions, where they do occur, do so primarily in the corridors of academia and Silicon Valley, not in popular discourse. That is despite their profound implications, and despite the fact that matters of ethics and values should be decided by society as a whole.

Ethics for a Changing World is a new fortnightly podcast about exactly these questions. In each episode, we discuss the ethics of a specific kind of technology with an expert. Stay tuned for thought-provoking content on a whole range of topics”

Hope you enjoy!

But how can alternative ethical systems help to reframe this problem? In this episode, Middle Eastern Political Economy...

The lecture by Dr. Jo Michell, which was scheduled for Dec. 1st at 7 pm, has been postponed due to nationwide UCU strike action. The presentation will soon be rescheduled for Epiphany term, the final details of which will be set in that term’s event card. We apologize to any members of the society or the public who were planning on attending this event; however, admission will continue to be free and open for next term as well.
