The National Student Survey (NSS) is now open - you have until 30 April 2026 to have your say!
The NSS is a national, independent and anonymised survey that gives final-year students the chance to share your views about your course and teaching. We want your views. It’s your NSS.

Shortly after the 2026 New Year’s festivities had finished, thirty 1st year fusion PhD students braved the ice and snow to come to the Physics Department at Durham University for three days to make some critical current (IC) measurements on high temperature superconductors (HTS). These students are part of the EPSRC funded CDT in Fusion Power. Much of their time was spent in the laboratories learning about HTS superconductors, cryogenics, nanovolt measurements in high magnetic fields, data acquisition and analysis while making critical current measurements at ~ 100 A, ~ 0.5 T, and 77 K. They also completed a short workshop focused on developing their skills using computation to optimise magnet design.

This week we celebrated one of our favourite traditions – the annual Christmas Lecture! Held in The Rochester Building, the event drew a fantastic audience from local sixth-form schools, for an inspiring talk titled “The Radio Universe”. Professor Leah Morabito, UKRI Future Leaders Fellow, took us on a fascinating journey through the wonders of radio astronomy. The lecture was recorded and will soon be available for everyone to enjoy on our website.

Congratulations to Professor Marek Szablewski who was presented by The President of Poland with a prestigious national award for services to the Polish Scouting Association, which operates outside Poland. Professor Szablewski was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta at a ceremony at the Polish Presidential Palace in Warsaw in July. Similar to an MBE in the UK, the Polonia Restituta is Poland’s second-highest civilian state award.
Professor Szablewski was given the award to recognise his voluntary work with the Polish Scouting Association. He’s currently President of the Association which operates from outside Poland in 14 countries across four continents with around 7,000 members.
Professor Szablewski said: “This award is a wonderful recognition of our scouting organisation, and of all the hundreds of volunteer leaders and helpers around the world who give up their time for the good of young people.
“Personally, it’s not something I ever expected to receive and I’m still very pleasantly surprised! It feels like the culmination of many years work and receiving the award at the Presidential Palace was particularly poignant for me.
“My mother, grandmother and uncle, along with other Polish civilians, took refuge in the air raid shelter beneath the palace when Warsaw was bombed at the start of the war in 1939.”
The Polish Scouting Association organises activities across the world, including camps, jamborees and meetings for children and young people of Polish heritage. The association fosters teamwork, resilience, leadership, practical skills and knowledge of Polish culture, history and traditions.
