Asligül Armagan (Arts Combined, Hatfield College, 2012-2015) has been shortlisted for the Culture, Creativity and Sport Award, and Yuk Chi Chan (Law, College of St Hild and St Bede, 2016-2019) has been shortlisted for the Business and Innovation Award.

“When I was little, my mam told me I was going to change the world. I didn’t know how, but I still believed it.”

Jessica carried that belief with her growing up in Spennymoor.

She worked hard, earned her place at Durham and then faced a reality so many students do: how to afford it.

Without support, that dream might have stopped there.

But thanks to a scholarship, Jessica has been able to fully embrace university life, building her confidence, discovering her direction, and starting to turn that childhood belief into something real.

A few days ago, many of you received a letter from Jessica.

Part of what make Durham unique is the collegiate system, where you can make life-long friends across year groups, various degree paths and from different walks of life.

Principal of St Mary's College, Adrian Simpson, reflects on how legacies are enormously valuable as being able to provide scholarships and bursaries can bring students together from all backgrounds and enable them to take part in the clubs and societies.
