We meet every Tuesday for writing, reviewing work and miscellaneous sessions. We also hold regular events, such as socials and writing events. We publish an annual anthology of the work that members of the society have written throughout the year. Hi writers!

'From the Lighthouse' magazine are running a writing workshop on Sunday 30th Jan for their latest issue on the theme of 'Waves'.

Tickets are free! You can choose between fiction (run by me!), poetry, drama and non-fiction, and come along for an afternoon of chill writing activities!

It'll be the perfect opportunity for anyone interested in submitting their writing to a Durham magazine to ask questions, get inspiration, and meet some of the people involved. There's no pressure to submit to the magazine but I'd love to see some familiar names in my inbox :))

Hope to see some of you there,
Emily x

Hi everyone,

The SU website is currently down so we haven't been able to get emails out to you or to set up the tickets for the session :((

We'll reach out as soon as this is fixed, but until then will keep you updated on our socials so keep an eye out for updates!

Hope you all enjoyed your first week back :) x

Hi guys,

Us exec are currently looking at booking our session rooms for next term and it's looking like if we want to move into the SU building for a cosier vibe, we'd need to move the timing of the weekly sessions an hour earlier.

As we know this might clash with other commitments you guys already have, we thought we'd post a poll to check whether there is a preference for either room. So without further ado...

Like for remaining in the TLC seminar rooms at 7:30-8:30

Heart react for moving to Upper Kingsgate in the SU at 6:30-7:30

Please get in touch if you feel strongly either way or if you have any questions! We want to do what's best for the society and if that means sticking with what works there's no problem :))

Once again, wishing you all a lovely Christmas xx

SAD NEWS!

The 8pm social tonight has had to be cancelled as the people at Hatters did not turn up to open for us.

We are currently brainstorming how best to rearrange our christmas session and will keep you updated as to what's happening.

So sorry for this! We are gutted :((

Hi everyone!

Just a reminder that our last session of term will be a special Christmas one! So we're going to be in Hatter's Tearoom on Tuesday the 7th of December, rather than our usual rooms in TLC or Elvet.

This means that if you'd like to attend, you need to sign up for one of our back-to-back sessions from 7-8 or 8-9 on the google form below...

And remember that this week is Critique Week, so bring along something you don't mind your fellow writers having a read of...

Hope to see you all there for a merry time!!

Hello writers!

I'm blurring worlds today to bring you a fantastic opportunity to have your work published in the DUELS magazine 'From the Lighthouse'. The theme for this issue is 'lights', and there are prompts on the various section pages of the magazine's facebook.

Check the post below out for more information, or feel free to get in touch with me at: [email protected] (which is - coincidentally - also the email for you to send in your anthology pieces!)

Looking forward to seeing you all next week (and maybe in my emails with magazine / anthology submissions) :))

Emily x

Welcome to From the Lighthouse. We are DUELS’ literary magazine and our aim is to showcase the talent at the heart of Durham University’s creative writing community.

It’s time for a new issue!

With Lumiere Festival finally back on the cards later this term, we thought it was incredibly appropriate to pick ‘Lights’ as the theme for our next issue of From the Lighthouse.

This can be interpreted in any way that you fancy- whether ‘lights’ make you think of sunrises, sunsets, Northern lights, lightbulbs, streetlights, fireworks, arty installations, Christmas, darkness, metaphorical ‘lightbulb’ moments etc. ‘Lights’ should act as a springboard to foster your imagination and take you in any direction with your work that you decide.

Check out the section contributor groups for specific content calls and useful writing prompts!

Send in your work by Wednesday 17th November for the chance to be featured. Best of luck!

We’re doing things a little differently this year. Instead of sending your work to [email protected], please send your work directly to the section you’re submitting to…

Poetry - [email protected]

Fiction - [email protected]

Drama - [email protected]

Non Fiction - [email protected]

Please note that the email for drama is a little different from the rest - the option to fit the pattern wasn’t available. 😞
