Dear all, finally an up date regarding the exit of Chelsea College/Brighton Uni from Eastbourne next year, and the possibility of a party!

Although in relatively early stages, I’m on a working party trying to put on a celebration of some kind, hopefully next May 2024.

As there is nothing concrete yet, I can’t say more, but we are trying to move fast to pin down a date etc. If we are successful, I will let you know asap, as getting numbers will be crucial.

Sorry for the long delay. It’s been interesting…

Dear all, regarding the closure of the Eastbourne site of Chelsea College (Brighton Uni) I have news of a sort.

I’m in contact with an ex-teaching colleague who has worked at Brighton Uni in Eastbourne for some time now & who, like me & loads of our year group (& other year groups!) - really wants to celebrate the legacy of our time there! In other words, we are working on the possibility of a huge PARTY!

Fingers crossed we can make it happen 🤞🏻 There’s no set date yet, but as it’s due to close at the end of the 2023-24 year, we’re thinking maybe April/May/June 2024 🤷🏼‍♀️ as a starting point. Make a note if you’re interested!

Just putting it out there. Very early stages, but hoping we can manage something! 🎉🥂🥳

To ex-Chelsea College friends etc who took the Cert Ed course, read on…

Calling out to all ex Students of Chelsea College of Physical Education.

A generation of early pioneers in encouraging girls to take part in sport are campaigning for a long belated recognition of their efforts – more than fifty years on.

In the late twentieth century, when women’s sport was much less fashionable than now, the training of women to be PE teachers took place at a small number of specialist Colleges of Physical Education, including Chelsea College at Eastbourne.

In those days, before teaching became an all-graduate profession, a three-year course typically led to a Certificate of Education.

In recent times there has been a growing movement across the higher education sector, for ex-students with these ‘teachers’ certificates’ to be awarded Honorary Degrees in recognition that a Cert. Ed. then, is now worthy of degree status. The Universities of London, Loughborough, Bedford, Sheffield, Worcester and several more have already awarded Hon. degrees to their former students.

The decision to upgrade the Certificate of Education remains in the hands of the newer universities into which the colleges were progressively absorbed.

Chelsea College became part of the former Brighton Polytechnic, now the University of Brighton, but the University has so far resisted calls to award these degrees.

Former Chelsea student *[Insert here your name (+ age, if you dare) and area where you live now] said: “Chelsea at Eastbourne was one of a small handful of specialist colleges that were at the very top of the tree in terms of the teaching of girls’ PE in secondary schools.

“Women’s sport had none of the status it has today, so Chelsea ‘graduates’ can truly be said to have been pioneers in encouraging girls to get involved.”

We need your support to move forward in our quest to be recognised like many other ex-students who were awarded a Cert. Ed but now have an Honorary Degree.

This is the year of mini-meets! We can’t travel far or meet easily without running the risk of getting Covid-19 and/or breaking the law, so instead we’re having mini-meets! Smaller, localised reunions just for the hell of it!

And today, we had a mini-meet in Eastbourne! 8 of us met at the Langham Hotel, on the seafront for a Prosecco cream tea 😋 But, of course, what we really met for was to TALK!! And talk. And talk some more

It was so lovely to chill and share a bit of what’s going on in our lives: family, retirement, hobbies, work! All sorts 😄

What unites us all is our time training to be PE teachers. Still got a lot of stories from 40+ years ago!! 😳
But plenty that we can’t remember…! Damn it 😂

Roll on the next one!! 😃

Sadly, Lesley couldn’t join us. Yesterday, she was pinged. 😣

So, this Saturday was supposed to be our ‘Chelsea College Reunion: We Are 60!’ day. Sadly cancelled due to current circumstances. But, here’s an idea....

On Saturday, please can everyone post (on here) a selfie? Show us where you are - home, garden, park, downs etc... with a bit of info about your day.

It will be a small way we can still be together, despite the miles that separate us 💖

18/03/2020

In view of the current situation, sadly the planned ‘60s Reunion’ this May 23rd, has been cancelled.

The plan is to rearrange next year.

We are all going through an unprecedented time of restrictions & worry, due to a virus which is still spiralling & a final outcome which is some distance away.

*Look after yourselves
*Look after each other
*Stay safe

See you next year 😊 Steph xx

Dear all,

How lovely to be in touch again! 😀 As most of you will be aware, we are once again planning another get together! 🥳 This time in celebration of our 60th birthdays 🎂🎈🎉🤩 Some of us have reached that milestone already and some have yet to get there. But, we’re all loitering around that area, so let’s do it again!

The date will be Saturday May 23rd, again the first weekend of the half term break. This will allow those who are still working, to have more time in Eastbourne or to make this commitment (hopefully!) with more time available to them.

The format has yet to be finally confirmed, but it is to be less formal, with the following idea in mind:

- Meet mid-morning for coffee + light refreshments (place tbc)
- Weather permitting: time on the beach
- Possible tour of college, if requested
- Meet for drinks in the evening (yet tba, but potentially Bishopsbourne again!)

So, I hope to see as many of you as possible - and more. And that’s where I need you all to do some searching...
We all live in different parts of the UK and the world! With that in mind, I am asking you all to do your best to track down more of our ex-classmates in these interim months!

Use whatever means you can think of: social media in all it’s different formats, plus the old-fashioned stuff, like newspaper articles and radio requests! Whatever might make a difference and I’ll ask the Alumni dept of Brighton Uni to help however they can- an ad in their news letter & whatever else they can suggest. Let’s see how many ex-college friends/colleagues from our year group, we can get in contact with!

So, no pressure! 😄😉
However many of you can attend, it will be a fun day/weekend.

I look forward to seeing lots of you in May! xx

PS -a few pics, past & present!
