STEM Summer Placement Scheme

STEM Summer Placement Scheme Science, Technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) placements for 16-18 year olds hosted by res What is the STEM summer placement scheme? What will I do?

The STEM summer placement scheme is a brand new initiative at the University of Birmingham. The scheme involves some of our world leading researchers hosting project opportunities within their disciplines for science inspired 16-18 year olds who have completed at least one academic term towards their A levels. When will the projects take place? Projects offered are on different dates throughout th

e summer and can be completed on a PT or FT basis. Do I have to pay for anything, or do I get paid? You don’t have to pay for the project, but you also won’t get paid for completing your placement. Also if you wanted to complete the Gold Crest Award as part of your placement then you will need to pay a £15 registration fee to the body that moderate the awards (Create a Future), but this is optional. Projects require a commitment of at least 70 hours, completion of a project report and presentation of results. As part of the scheme there will also be the opportunity to complete a British Science Association Gold Crest Award. Where can I find out more information about the BSA Gold Crest Award? You can find out more information from the British Science Association’s website using the following link:
http://www.britishscienceassociation.org/crest-awards/crest-awards-11-19-yrs/about-crest-awards

How do I find out more about the projects being offered? If you are interested in enhancing your CV, trying out something new, challenging yourself and want to be involved, please email Dr Laura Vickers ([email protected]) and register your interest. A pack will be sent to you with details of available projects. I’ve only just finished my GCSE’s and haven’t yet started my A levels, can I still be involved for this year or should I wait for next year? As this is a pilot year places are limited for 2014, we are hoping to be able to offer more projects in 2015, keep checking this page and more details will be available nearer the time.
