How do you write the world's first AI law? Ask someone who did. This autumn, the University of Edinburgh Library hosts a three-part online lecture series on the EU AI Act - how it was made, what it means for copyright in the age of AI, and how it will be enforced. Each session brings a leading EU figure to Edinburgh (virtually) for a 30-minute talk followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A.

We open with Dragos Tudorache, former MEP and co-rapporteur of the EU AI Act, on the negotiations that shaped it: the trade-offs, the sticking points, and what Europe set out to achieve.

Setting up your student space? You might be able to pick up a few essentials for free 🏡

Take What You Need returns this Friday, with pre-loved household items donated by students who moved out of accommodation last year. You’ll find things like crockery, utensils, storage, hangers, books, games and more 🤩

The event starts at 12pm at Potterrow, with items available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each student can bring one shopping bag to take away a few essentials 🛍️

When the Main Library opened its doors in the autumn of 1967, it was a triumph of Modernist architecture. Designed by Sir Basil Spence’s Edinburgh office of Spence, Glover & Ferguson, every detail inside its concrete walls was designed and purpose built for collections, students and staff. You can explore these early years through the ordinary objects that shaped its daily routine in a new display on the Mezzanine of the Main Library, now open until Spring 2027.
