Congratulations to all our GCSE learners on their results last week - this year saw some truly brilliant results and outcomes at Exeter College!

For our adult learners, we saw an incredible 80% pass rate in Biology GCSE, with two learners securing the highest grade possible (grade 9), alongside above-national-average pass rates in GCSE Maths and English.

Many of our adult learners juggle a busy life alongside their studies, and for many English isn't their first language, which makes their achievements even more impressive.

Last Thursday also saw young learners finding out their GCSE Maths and English resit results. We're so proud of all their hard work, and are pleased to share that the College's resit pass rate was more than 5% above the national average for English, and more than 4% above the national average for Maths.

We also saw brilliant progress for young learners who are Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET) in the South West. As part of a joint project between the College, the University of Exeter and Devon County Council, 25 young NEET learners sat their GCSE English and Maths, with more than half getting a grade 4 or above, and every single learner achieving a grade.

A huge well done to all our learners who sat a GCSE exam this year, and a big thank you to our dedicated staff who supported them!

Sophie enjoyed some fantastic work experience on the set of the BBC series 'Can You Keep a Secret?'

As well as meeting Dawn French and Mark Heap, she received great feedback from her team.

"It was an amazing experience to be invited to shadow on the set of a prominent BBC drama, which wouldn’t have been possible without meeting the production manager, who visited and spoke at Exeter College."

"The best part of the day was being able to stand alongside the director and watch the monitor while the filming was taking place. It gave me a real insight into what it is like to work within the film industry, especially seeing how decisions are made on set and how everyone works together to create the final shot. In the moment, it honestly felt unreal to be there and feel so involved in the production process. I am so grateful to have been given this opportunity."

Sophie is looking forward to starting an Apprenticeship in Multichannel Marketing, and to get further experience in the film industry.

Sarah collected her successful GCSE Maths results last week. 🙌

Sarah has learning disabilities, and came to Exeter with the help of Nala, her support dog.

“When I found out I was excited. I haven’t told my boyfriend yet, but I’m really pleased! It was just amazing, especially with my teacher Krisztina, she’s amazing, and my mum, to have that support is just brilliant."

“When you have so many people say you couldn’t do it, you want to prove them wrong. The thing is to have a really amazing support network, and mine was my mum. When you get that one person that says, come on, you can do it, you’ll get the result at the end of it."

Well done to all our adult learners who picked up their GCSE results today!

Becky works at the College in the Learning Support department and has been studying GCSE Maths while working here. Becky found out this morning she passed, and is absolutely delighted!

"I’m really pleased. I’m so relieved. I honestly didn’t think I’d passed it. My teacher called me and asked if I wanted the results, and when she told me, I was ecstatic.

“I feel I’ve been really lucky to be in a position to study and work at the same time. Work have been amazing in supporting that, and now I’ll be able to better support students by having a better understanding of Maths.

“I have an eight-year-old son, so sometimes revising would be a little bit tricky, but now I’ve got that foundation of knowledge, I can also help him going forward as well as the students at the College.”

Well done, Becky! 👏

Results Day Spotlight: Our Pathway to Vocational Training 💼

We are meeting skills gaps in our local economy by offering high quality vocational courses with industry standard facilities.

Jack studied a T Level in Business Management and Administration. He earned a distinction and is looking forward to starting a Level 4 Apprenticeship with the Met Office.

“I got my distinction, so I couldn’t be happier. It’s brilliant to open up the results and see that. The course was interesting fun, you do work experience alongside the T level, so I did that at the NHS, and it was really good fun, really valuable to get that experience in the working world."

Effie studied the Nursing pathway in her T Level Health course.

"I absolutely loved it. It was amazing, the College was so supportive."

"I chose to do the T Level because of the opportunity to do 315 hours of experience at work placement. I was in hospitals, I went in theatre rooms, watched surgeries, and I got to practice clinical skills."

"What I enjoyed most about College was meeting all of my new friends. I didn't know anyone before coming here, and I've got a whole group of friends now."

Effie is off to study nursing at the University of Southampton – good luck!

Results Day Spotlight: Our Pathway to Apprenticeships 🤝

Freya earned a distinction in her Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship with Goonvean Fibres Ltd!

“It’s been a really good entry point into my job. I don’t think I probably would have got in if I didn’t start with an apprenticeship.”

"I always knew I didn't want to go to uni, but I wanted to do something in business. I saw the Business Administration Apprenticeship role and I thought it was right for me, to help me progress."

"I've really enjoyed it to be honest. I don't think I can say that enough. All the teachers were there to support me, if I had any questions not just about College work but about work in general, they always helped me."

She is now working full-time with Goonvean Fibres Ltd, and may progress to another apprenticeship in future.
