Were you part of a sports club or played sport socially during your Exeter days? ⚽

"I played in all of the games for the EUAFC 1st XI as a fresher in 1996-1997, and didn’t miss a 1st XI game over the next 2 seasons between 1997-1999. The football club WAS my University experience.

"I respected the senior players who I looked up to as a fresher; I remember my debut and the marrow; the away tours (particularly the only fools and horses tour to Brunel); the celebrations after winning our league in 1996-1997, representing the South West and English Uni teams, and playing in a testimonial game in front of hundreds of people against Exeter City; the pre season hill runs with Dizzy; and playing with some of the best players I ever played with in my life."

We love memories from our alumni so it was wonderful when alumnus Les Gallop (Sociology, 1967) got in touch to share some of his recollections of meeting Barbara Hepworth's nephew - Ed Summerson - who was also studying at Exeter.

Les recalls: "A small group of us one lunchtime were going for a drink locally. There was a student in the year below us who occasionally joined us for a drink. As we were getting ready, he joined us to say hello and we invited him to come for a drink again with us: he was always good company. He said he would like to come but had to meet his auntie who was giving something to the university.

"That didn’t mean much to us at the time. However, we later found out that the ‘auntie’ he was referring to was Barbara Hepworth. She was donating a sculpture to the university. Ed's father was Sir John Summerson, a prominent architectural historian. His mother was Elizabeth Hepworth, whose sister was Barbara. So, that friendly and funny young man really was connected to a great artist!"

We love hearing from our alumni about their Exeter memories. 💚

The recent UK heatwaves ☀️ brought some back to the surface for alumnus Stephen De Silva (Theology, 1977):

"The garden party was in the sunshine of the fabled summer of '76, which so many are comparing to this year, fifty years later. It was an afternoon of strawberries and cream, blazers and floaty dresses, and a chance to socialise before the term ended. It was the end of my second year and finals were aeons away. Looking at this invite and the button-hole rose I wore that day plus the memories they brings to the surface, fills me with nostalgia, especially now that Crossmead Hall is gone."

We love hearing memories from our alumni of their time at the University of Exeter. 💚

Recently, we caught up with Mike Cooper (English and Drama, 1975) who has generously chosen to leave a gift in his Will to Exeter. Mike shared some of the moments from his student days that have stayed with him over the years, alongside this photo of Streatham Campus.

"The first memory would be arriving at St. David’s on a train from Paddington, having flown in from New York City to start my course with two suitcases, little clear sense of what my life was going to be like, and yet a clear sense of excitement.

"A later one would be seeing people skiing down Fore Street after a surprise snowfall. Another would be touring local primary schools with fellow Drama students with a couple of folktales we’d adapted. And finally, a sense of achievement mixed with relief as I marched across the Great Hall stage to collect my degree diploma… still with no sense of what my life was going to be like!"
