We hosted the last in our current Leading Edge series last week in the stimulating surroundings of the Wellcome Collection.
The series brings high quality speakers to current students and alumni drawn from our Exeter MBA and Degree Apprenticeships programmes at Exeter, together with colleagues from our business community, to inspire new ways of thinking about responsible leadership.

For our last session in this series, and on the eve of International Women’s Day, we welcomed Cath Bishop as our keynote speaker. Drawing on her experience as an Olympic rower, Cath shared her insights on why our conventional sense of ‘winning’ may not give us the buzz and reward that we anticipate it will. Instead, she posits the idea of the ‘long win’, taking a more collaborative, long-term and balanced approach to redefining high performance.

Our panel of three incredible leaders comprised:

⭐ Erika Brodnock MBE award winning entrepreneur, philanthropist and angel investor
⭐Melanie Keen Director of the Wellcome Collection
⭐Sam Mukhopadhyay Head of COP28 UK Pavilion, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero

Together, our panel illustrated powerfully the connection between the ‘long win’ and building inclusive environments for our teams to thrive in.

Thanks to all who attended. We were delighted to have our Honorary Professor John Amaechi with us for the evening too – an added bonus on an inspiring evening.

We were pleased to welcome Dr Margaret Heffernan to campus last week for the third event of our series.

Hosted and curated by Ciara Eastell OBE from the Exeter Centre for Leadership, the series brings high quality speakers to current students and alumni drawn from The Exeter MBA and Degree Apprenticeships at Exeter, together with our local business community, to inspire new ways of thinking about responsible leadership.

To a packed audience, Margaret talked about why – in her view – CEOs are not taking the climate crisis seriously. Drawing on her book ‘Wilful Blindness’, Margaret highlighted the challenges CEOs are now facing in tackling multiple issues and planning for an uncertain future. It’s overwhelming and often easier for CEOs to focus on the general ‘busyness’ of their roles and the multiple targets they need to achieve. She talked powerfully about the value of CEOs supporting and enabling climate champions within their own organisations to pioneer new and innovative approaches and highlighted how we all have a responsibility to act now – both in our professional and personal lives – in support of nature and the climate.

We heard from CEOS James Mackenzie-Blackman and Fiona Carden on how they are supporting their teams and their wider stakeholders to think more consciously about the climate and from Prof. Donald Lancaster we heard about the value of telling powerful stories to engage our CEOs, teams and the wider public.

Thank you to all who joined us. What were your leadership takeaways?

Do join us for our final Leading Edge session of this series at the Wellcome Collection in London, 7th March where we will be joined by Dr Cath Bishop and an incredible panel. Register here - https://ow.ly/FbSm50QwcNg
