Centre For Metamaterial Research and Innovation - CMRI

Centre For Metamaterial Research and Innovation - CMRI A £12 million centre for doctoral training, funded by EPSRC, the University of Exeter and industry.

‌Metamaterials, fabricated microstructures having properties beyond those found in nature, are emerging as an important new class of materials with applications in many technology areas, from energy harvesting, through perfect imaging, to the much-hyped ‘cloaking’. This new EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training hosted by the University of Exeter will train a cohort of up to 18 PhD students per year f

rom September 2014. Our students will research a wide range of metastructures spanning 10 orders of scale, from atomic, (graphene), through nano-scale, to control electron spin (spintronics) and light (plasmonics), up to the metre scale (radio antennas). Exeter has a well-established and strong track record of relevant research, spanning a unique mix of interests: from microwave metasurfaces to carbon nanotubes, from graphene plasmonics to spintronics, magnonics and magnetic composites, from terahertz photonics to biomimetics. The Exeter vision is to combine depth and breadth of metamaterial research, intrinsically linked with international academic and industrial collaborations.

Congratulations to our second year PGR Dan Moore on publishing his work on experimental characterisation of the coupled acoustic line modes supported within a glide-symmetric waveguide, demonstrating a tuneable band-gap as a function of coupling strength, published in Nature, Scientific reports! 😃👏

Confined coupled acoustic line-modes supported by two parallel lines of periodic holes on opposite surfaces of a glide-symmetric waveguide have a hybrid character combining symmetric and anti-symmetric properties. These hybrid coupled acoustic line-modes have a near constant group velocity over a br...
