Behind the Curtain: The hidden origin stories of documentary films and their journey from idea to screen 🎥 🎞️

When: Wednesday 13th May, 4pm
Where: The Screening Room, Thornlea

This event will showcase the documentary film work of two members of CDF staff: Konstantinos Thomaidis (Drama) and Jezz Vernon (Film). It will include the first department screening of the award-winning film ‘Mother Company’, and excerpts from two of eXeFilms productions, ‘Public Enemy’ and ‘The Hard Stop’.

Konstantinos and Jezz will discuss their experience of making the films, as well as engaging with the creative industries in their promotion and showings on the festival circuit and online. This will be a great opportunity to hear about the process of making documentaries, and issues of their distribution in the wider creative industries.

Calling all students! 🗣️

Applications for the First Steps Touring Bursary 2026 are open for submissions! 💫

This scheme is hosted by Doorstep Arts, Theatre Alibi, Exeter Northcott and Villages in Action. It is a public scheme, open to theatre-makers in the professional arts industry, as well as university students making work which has professional potentials 🎭

There is a track record of Exeter University students being successful with this scheme over the past 8 years, enabling students to tour to 3-4 additional sites (schools or libraries) in May & June via the funding.

The bursary award is £1,000 (maximum).
Deadline is 24th April 2026.

The final decision about the successful applicant for 2026 will be made by a panel of producers from the above organisations.

Why not give it a whirl?! 🌀

Note - You do not need the full original performance company in place in order to do this extension tour with one of your performances... you would just need consent/permission from your previous collaborators and a clear plan for how you would stage the show with a smaller ensemble, or a plan for replacing performers with new actors. It is possible to re-cast certain roles, or to scale down a 6-person show to a 3 or 4-hander to make it more tour-able.

This is an optional extension opportunity. It’s a supported next step for motivated students who are prepared to work toward establishing a career in the professional arts.
