The Royal Devon is leading ground-breaking clinical research that has the potential to transform treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders.

Delivered in collaboration with the University of Exeter Faculty of Health & Life Sciences and Devon Partnership NHS Trust, the studies involve using regulated forms of psychedelic drugs.

These innovative therapies could prove effective for treating conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD).

Amazing achievement by Professor Gavin Price who was presented an award by outgoing US president Joe Biden.

Professor Price was one of only 400 individuals awarded The President Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.

This award, considered the highest accolade the US government bestows on scientist and engineers in their early careers, is a huge achievement and we look forward to seeing what Professor Price achieves next.

Alzheimer’s Society has today called for dementia training to be mandatory is social care settings.

The charity has highlighted our iWHELD care home training programme as evidence-based best practice.

Developed with King's College London, the programme puts person-centred care at its heart, improving quality of life for residents and reducing psychiatric medication use

‘My wife moved into a care home at 63 and I thank my lucky stars we picked the right one.’

Our research shows that 70% of people living in older age residential care have dementia, yet only 29% of care workers in England have received any dementia training.

Trevor’s wife Yvonne was diagnosed with young onset Alzheimer’s in 2013. He’s seen first-hand the benefit specialist dementia training has had on the quality of care Yvonne has received.

‘Having Yvonne in a good care home is one thing I don’t have to worry about, they pride themselves on specialist dementia care staff with specific dementia training.

‘The care home staff knew straight away that being only 63, Yvonne would have capabilities and needs different to other residents. They took time to ask what her hobbies and interests were and treated her as an individual – which is essential in my view.

‘When I dropped Yvonne off, the care home took her straight out to buy bird feeders. They took her to the local pet store and made a huge fuss of her. Yvonne told them which ones to buy. As Yvonne also loved cooking and gardening, they baked with her and asked her to help in the garden.

‘Everyone should have the experience Yvonne was given. A person-centric approach, which recognises the symptoms of dementia, and helps the individual thrive in the best way they can. Yvonne was only 63 when she went into her care home, and without staff with an understanding of dementia, I dread to think how different her experience could have been...and mine too.’

Our new £10m centre will tackle the health impacts of climate change!
The Centre for Net Positive Health and Climate Solutions is funded by UK Research and Innovation and led by Professor Tim Taylor
