We are very excited to be collaborating with PPE Soc for the inaugural A-Z Pub Crawl! Read the rules below carefully, and we’ll see you at The Stand Off at 3PM on 18th March.

🤝TEAMMATES🤝

This is a joint social, so we want to have teams that include members from both societies. However, we understand that pub crawls with your mates are more fun than strangers, so we have made a form where you can submit a preferred teammate.

📜 RULES 📜

Starting with A, each person in turn in your group needs to finish a drink beginning with each letter of the alphabet (i.e. Person 1 does ‘A’, person 2 does ‘B’…). As a result, each member will drink around five drinks each. The size of these drinks are up to you. And don't be afraid to get creative, as long as you're having fun.

Letters can represent the type of drink, brand or name, for example, B could be ‘beer’, ‘bacardi and coke or ‘black russian’. Drinks can be bought from pubs, bars, supermarkets, corner shops etc. as long as they fulfil the brief. (HINT: M&S sell a £10 bottle of rosé called ‘Quintessence’)

The next letter’s drink cannot be started until the previous one is finished. Photos must be taken of each drink and explained to Nate at the end. Prizes will be given the further down the alphabet your team gets.

We will finish at Stand-off at 9:00, don't be late!

⚠️Important Info about TP⚠️

Also due to the new TP rules, we cannot walk into the club on Saturday after the crawl, so if you would like to join us at TP, you will need to buy your own ticket.

On Thursday 26th of January, The Diplomatic Hub was honoured to host the Spanish Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, José Pascual Marco Martínez at the university. On the first sunny day in weeks, the Ambassador received an expert historical tour of the city facilitated by Jesse Lynch, a History PhD candidate at the university, followed by a tour of the Reed Hall gardens. Throughout the day, Ambassador Marco also met with senior staff at the university, including the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lisa Roberts, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement, Richard Follett, and the Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global) for Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, Li Li, as well as many other staff from Hispanic Studies and Politics.

The central element of the day was the Ambassador’s lecture, delivered to an audience of 70 students and professors. This fascinating and interactive insight into the life of an ambassador was a fantastic example of the value of these events, with Ambassador Marco detailing his experiences of working in diplomatic missions around the world and illuminating us on Spain’s relationship with Britain post-Brexit.

A tremendous amount of work went into this event, and the Diplomatic Hub would like to thank all those involved, in particular the Global Partnerships team and the SPSPA and History departments. Likewise, special thanks goes to the Spanish Embassy and the Ambassador himself for offering his time and sharing his expertise with us.

📣 We are pleased to announce the theme for the next edition of The Diplomatic Post - SOVEREIGNTY 📣

Submission deadline 19th December.

In today’s world, we have many reasons to question what sovereignty means. Putin’s invasion of Ukraine signifies a significant blow to diplomacy, but what does this tell us about sovereignty in today’s world? Does sovereignty only lie in the hands of the strong? How do elites view national sovereignty compared to ordinary citizens?

We are looking for articles that can broaden our understanding of sovereignty whilst drawing upon historical and modern day examples. These can draw upon the many dimensions afforded by a term as broad as sovereignty; economic, political, military, etc. How can we prevent Sino-Taiwanese escalation? What role does geo-economics play in defining conflict?

Please reach out for some guidance to discuss your ideas if you are unsure what to write about! These prompts are designed to get you thinking about possible topics and titles, but feel free to take one yourself! Use whatever examples and case studies you feel fit.

We accept work from students at all levels, academics and professionals. Writing for the journal is a great way to express your ideas and the topics you are interested in outside of your degree. On top of this, it’s a fantastic opportunity to be published alongside expert practitioners in the field of international relations.

This is not one to miss, get writing and get your name published!

Please send all submissions and questions to [email protected]. Guidelines for submissions can be found on our website.

We are very excited to announce the theme for our upcoming journal - SURVEILLANCE

Submission deadline 31st May

We are looking for articles on the who, what, where and why of domestic and foreign electronic surveillance. Surveillance is perhaps the most important thing to effect our daily lives and as technology rapidly evolves the scope and reach from the individual to the governmental scale expands.

In the digital age control is arguably gained through data. To what extent is this surveillance brought under the remit of national security?

How has the advent of digital technology forced formally discrete systems of diplomacy and the lives of diplomats to be more openly shared within the panopticon of the digital world of social media?

Do you remember Project Pegasus? What has been the diplomatic response to the wide use and investigations into the spyware software?

Feel free to take the prompt where you like and reach out to discuss your ideas! Use whatever examples and case studies you feel fit.

This journal will be taking an exciting turn, with a special collaboration with Monash International Affairs Society and their publication Pivot!

It is not one to miss, get writing and get your name published!
