Did you get your grades for the University of Exeter?
We are the Rethinking Society, a community based in Exeter determined to keep empathy and critical thinking at the forefront of discourse. Our committee has worked tirelessly to reimagine our society for the new year, with a pivotal focus on the engagement of our wonderful members.
The Rethinking Society was established in 2016 by a group of people from different areas of study seeking to enhance their discourse on a broad range of subjects by introducing their unique perspectives. From the beginning, we have always valued diversity of thought and given equal importance to the views of each member. We meet once a week to discuss topics such as ‘Drugs’, ‘Spirituality’, ‘Art’ or ‘Climate change’. In these sessions we give you the chance to explore different perspectives and keep an open mind. Everyone should have the opportunity to have their thoughts listened to and challenged. Equally, there is no obligation to speak at these sessions. At Rethinking we place the wellbeing and comfort of our members at the forefront of their experience.
We are a pluralist society (meaning that as a committee we do not hold an authoritarian position over members) with left-leaning values. We maintain the belief that debates are not simply a matter of ‘for’ and ‘against’, and our sessions frequently to not end in a unanimous resolution. But we do hope that our sessions culminate in self-growth and understanding of others. We also aim to foster community, friendship and camaraderie both within and outside our sessions, with regular socials, meet-ups and online communication between members.
We hope that you received the grades you worked hard to achieve, and we hope to see you at our stall in Freshers’ week.
