We are so excited to reveal our new project as Rethinking Committee for 2024/25!

As part of our mission to involve our members in constructing our society we are introducing our new zine, Rethink. Our zine will aim provide the opportunity to archive experiences within our sessions, highlight community artists, and share new ideas.

Our first issue will be an introduction to our committee and our new aims. In the future, we are looking towards involving our members and encourage you to share your essays, art and other creative endeavors.

Rethinking Issue 1 will be in print in September, visit us at our stall for a copy!

Did you get your grades for the University of Exeter?

We are the Rethinking Society, a community based in Exeter determined to keep empathy and critical thinking at the forefront of discourse. Our committee has worked tirelessly to reimagine our society for the new year, with a pivotal focus on the engagement of our wonderful members.

The Rethinking Society was established in 2016 by a group of people from different areas of study seeking to enhance their discourse on a broad range of subjects by introducing their unique perspectives. From the beginning, we have always valued diversity of thought and given equal importance to the views of each member. We meet once a week to discuss topics such as ‘Drugs’, ‘Spirituality’, ‘Art’ or ‘Climate change’. In these sessions we give you the chance to explore different perspectives and keep an open mind. Everyone should have the opportunity to have their thoughts listened to and challenged. Equally, there is no obligation to speak at these sessions. At Rethinking we place the wellbeing and comfort of our members at the forefront of their experience.

We are a pluralist society (meaning that as a committee we do not hold an authoritarian position over members) with left-leaning values. We maintain the belief that debates are not simply a matter of ‘for’ and ‘against’, and our sessions frequently to not end in a unanimous resolution. But we do hope that our sessions culminate in self-growth and understanding of others. We also aim to foster community, friendship and camaraderie both within and outside our sessions, with regular socials, meet-ups and online communication between members.

We hope that you received the grades you worked hard to achieve, and we hope to see you at our stall in Freshers’ week.

Fear is a powerful emotion that can change our minds, keep us up at night, and persuade the masses. Many of our behaviours are guided by fear, most of them due to fear of the unknown or our natural preservation instincts. Fear can be contagious and can seep through generations, it can be learnt and develop into a larger terror over time. How beneficial is fear, and how can we learn from this emotion? Why do some people enjoy the feeling of fear? How does the power of fear change our minds and our behaviour?
⚠️ HUSTINGS will take place at 6PM on Thursday 16th before this session.

Have you ever wondered why some subjects are still considered ‘taboo’? Were you ever told not to ask a man his salary, or a woman her age? Have you ever seen a man walk with his shirt out in public on a hot day, but a woman trying to cover her chest while breastfeeding? Are there some things we should just not talk about? Well, we’re here to talk about them: whether it’s kinks, aging, money, s*x or any other oddity! 😋
