USSU - University of Sussex Students' Union The Students' Union is a charity, separate to and independent from the University of Sussex. We are a democratic, student-focused organisation.

We exist to make student life better. The Students’ Union is a democratic organisation that is student led and student focused. Its function is to facilitate, empower and support students in organising themselves whether that is to produce a creative magazine such as The Channel, to run campaigns such as Sussex Under the Sheets or Access Sussex, or to be part of one of our societies such as the LG

BTQ+ Society or BAME Society or to join a sports club team like Women's Hockey. It also aims to represent students and campaign for progressive change on a University and national level to improve students lives. Recently we have supported a student campaign called Renters' Union and successfully won 3 million in rent reductions from the University over the pandemic. It also provides students with services ranging from the Advice Service which gives free and confidential advice to students for educational and welfare relating issues, facilitating student sports and societies to running a students’ lettings agency. The Union is directed by students through policy made a regular Union Council meetings, by the 57 elected students who represent the student body in the Union at meetings, and through student-led referenda.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has released new guidance on the Equality Act, including updated sections on single-sex spaces. We recognise this may be distressing for our community, particularly our trans and non-binary students.

We stand with our trans and non-binary students. You are valued, you are welcome, and we will continue working to ensure you feel safe, supported, and respected on campus.

We are taking time to review the updated guidance, work with the NUS, and to seek advice on what this means for us as a Union. We will share further information on the rights of trans and non-binary students, including clear guidance on what this does and does not mean in practice, and where support is available.

We’ve included websites and services signposting you to dedicated support in this post, and would very much encourage you to access these if you are affected. Please DM us if you would like direct links to any of the services listed.
