Meanwhile the second "Expeditionary skills" team mountain biked (some carrying bikes was involved 🙂) from Corrour station over to Ben Alder Cottage; climbed the munro Ben Alder; then rode out to Rannoch station to catch the train back to college. Thanks to Mike Pescod for the pics.

Alot of fun and learning, but also an opportunity to explore how we each experienced the learning process, and the structure of the coaching that Mike provided. In 2026, we’re celebrating 20 years since the first qualification was awarded from the department that became the School of Adventure Studies.

Since then, our graduates have gone on to build careers in outdoor education, adventure tourism, guiding, sustainability, leadership and much more.

Meet April. She started her journey with NQ Outdoor Adventure SCQF 5 in Broadford, before progressing to NQ Outdoor Leadership SCQF 6 in Fort William.

She’s now working as a seasonal outdoor instructor, leading paddle sports and climbing activities.

You don’t have to be in Skye to study our Broadford-based Outdoor Adventure course. 🏔️

An innovative partnership with outdoor learning and adventure charity Outfit Moray means learners in Moray are taking part, despite being over 100 miles away!

The course starts in October and includes practical adventure activities such as caving, canyoning and kayaking, alongside virtual learning and residential weeks in the Cairngorms and on Skye.

The final third year expediton of the 25-26 academic year is in Madeira, currently trekking across the island before dropping down to the coast to explore some surf locations. Its been pretty misty up in the hills, and so opportunities to gauge the current swell and surf conditions have been limited!
