**Student Opportunity July / August 2021**

GCU Community and Public Engagement is looking for Dietetic and Nutrition students from any level of the programme to support a children’s cooking project with North Glasgow Community Food Initiative (NGCFI), Milton Hub during the summer holidays as volunteers. The programme will take place over four sessions on week days in late July and early August with small groups of primary school aged children. Each session is expected to consist of a 30minute nutrition workshop followed by a 60-90 minute cooking session.

Initially we are looking for students to work with the Manager at NGCFI via Zoom to confirm the theme for each session and then take on the task of developing a session with a nutrition lesson and a recipe for food relating to that theme. The hope is that students might then be able to deliver these lessons in person alongside the community chef on site in their facility in Milton. We are working on getting approval for student volunteers to be out in community by then with COVID-secure measures in place but we will have a contingency plan in place should restrictions mean this is not possible.

NGCFI is a fantastic organisation with a community garden, a weekly fruit and veg barra and a community fridge and community café being established so it is a really exciting time for students to be involved. See their website for more information: https://www.ngcfi.org.uk/what-we-do/food-hubs/milton/

If you are interested in getting involved, please email [email protected] by Friday 18th June with your name, year of study and your GCU email address. Please also indicate if you are available for remote development late June/early July, available for delivery end July/start August or both.

Next up on the committee we have Hollie!
“Hi there I'm Hollie and this year I am the society’s Social Media Officer! After summer I will be going into third year!
I have an interest in paediatric dietetics and also sport nutrition.
In working with young people with additional support needs, I’ve read and been involved in care plans with regards to their feeding whether it be Peg, ng or orally and this also is of great interest to me. Also myself ,at the age of 12, and my family have been diagnosed with an under active thyroid and so I’ve taken a real interest in learning how diet can really help control my symptoms.
Over the past few years I have found a love for weightlifting and with that comes an interest in nutrition around this sport. In my spare time you'll catch me either in the gym, having brunch with friends or at the beach!”
