🌿 80 Years of Discovery at SCENE

For 80 years, the University of Glasgow's Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment (SCENE) has connected students and researchers with the landscapes, wildlife and ecosystems of Loch Lomond.

For Professor Chris Harrod, a placement at SCENE as an undergraduate student in 1996 was a defining moment that inspired a lifelong career in ecology. Today, as Director of SCENE, he is helping new generations of students make discoveries of their own.

From revealing more about Atlantic salmon migration to helping scientists understand how ecosystems respond to environmental change, SCENE's research continues to make a real world impact.

Generations of donor support have helped transform the site into a world class research, teaching and residential facility, giving students the opportunity to learn through hands on experience and helping researchers tackle some of the most important environmental challenges of our time.

🎶 Finding Our Voice: Bringing Gaelic to Life at Glasgow

What happens when staff, students, fluent speakers and complete beginners come together through song?

The University of Glasgow Gaelic Choir is doing just that. Since its first rehearsal earlier this year, Scotland's first university Gaelic Choir has grown into a vibrant community, bringing people together to celebrate Gaelic language, culture and music.

Thanks to support from the Chancellor's Fund, the Choir can work with professional conductor Katie Cooper, helping members build confidence, develop their voices and create something truly special together.

For many members, it's about much more than singing. It's about community, belonging and keeping Gaelic culture thriving for future generations.

With performances already underway and invitations arriving from across the University, the Choir is only just getting started.

🌍 Two Glasgow Graduates. Five Decades Apart. One Unexpected Meeting.

What are the chances?

While attending a conference in Ohio, USA, alumna Saika Sharmin (M.S. Mechanical Engineering and Management, 2019–20) struck up a conversation with fellow attendee Dr David after spotting the title "Dr" on his name badge.

When she asked where he completed his PhD, his answer sparked an instant connection...

🎓 University of Glasgow!

Dr David earned his PhD in Zoology around 1969 before going on to build a distinguished research career in Ohio. More than 50 years later, he found himself meeting a fellow Glasgow graduate from a completely different discipline and generation, thousands of miles from campus.

From Glasgow to Ohio, this chance encounter is a wonderful reminder that wherever life takes our graduates, the University of Glasgow community is never far away. 💙

For Black History Month, we’re remembering some of our notable Black alumni and the lasting contributions they made in their fields, communities and beyond.
Throughout the University’s history, Black students have come to Glasgow to pursue their education, often becoming pioneers in their fields and, in many cases, the first in their regions, families or communities to pursue higher education.

From medicine and academia to public life and beyond, their experiences reflect the diverse histories and achievements that form part of the University of Glasgow’s story.

This Black History Month, we’re taking the opportunity to recognise and celebrate these individuals, whose achievements continue to be remembered today.
