University of Strathclyde Motorsport

University of Strathclyde Motorsport A team of undergraduate students who love designing and building racecars - 20+ years in the making.

Driven to be part of something fast, USM consists of around 50 students from across various engineering departments and other faculties within the university. Competing every year at international events, we have a strong focus on building soft and hard skills through the design of a race car, ensuring knowledge transfer and in doing so building a community within the team.

In May, Babcock International Group invited us to display USM26 at the Festival of Engineering at their site in Rosyth!

Presenting to over 300 primary school pupils, it was a fantastic opportunity to speak to the next generation of STEM students, introducing them to design principles and our DV autonomous system.

We’d like to give a big thank you to Babcock for making it all possible, and for the rest of their support this season!

In the run up to FS France, we’d like to take this week to showcase some of our sponsors who have made this season possible!

First up is Pressure Profile Systems, who have provided us with some of their AeroStrips. These provide live pressure readings, which makes them ideal for aerodynamic testing. So far this year, we’ve used them to validate our test setup and investigate different configurations for our rear wing. We’re also planning to run their sensors in post-season testing to validate our aero package design!

A big thank you to PPS for all their support this season!

FSUK Saturday and Sunday Recap!

After arriving back from Silverstone on Monday, we're looking back on an amazing week of competition.

Saturday started strong with all drivers completing egress. The team then went into EV scrutineering, the final stage before dynamic tests. Unfortunately a few setbacks kept us from running on Saturday, despite a massive push from our electrical members.

Thanks to the incredible work of the whole team, USM26 passed EV scrutineering on Sunday morning. Noise, brake and tilt tests were then passed by the afternoon.

Meanwhile our driverless team was busy having the most successful day in the team's history. After coming just 5 meters shy of finishing Fridays acceleration event, they worked tirelessly through Saturday to make an incredible comeback. They entered Sundays track drive event spectacularly, flying through all 10 laps and finishing their first ever dynamic event!

Just after track drive finished, the EV team lined up for the second afternoon endurance session. USM26 hit the track setting a time that would have placed us 6th in the previous days sprint, showing fantastic performance. Unfortunately a mechanical failure forced us to retire the car early.

There were still plenty of positives to take from the event, including the improved reliability of our electric powertrain which didn’t experience any significant issues like it had in previous years. This is a testament to all the hard work from our electrical team this year.

A huge thank you from the team to everyone that supports us 💙

Another day at FSUK in the books!

Day 2 was a busy one with both the EV and Driverless teams completing their static events. The EV team collected three more scruit stickers for tech, safety and chassis, while the DV team attempted their first ever acceleration event!

Still some more work to do tomorrow to get the EV car on track so stay tuned.

FSUK Day 1 Done!

Some good progress was made by both our EV and driverless teams today.

The EV team got through most of the mechanical checks and completed accumulator scrutineering in record time, while the driverless team completed all of their safety checks, and competed in DV skidpad (with some difficulty 😅)

Still plenty more work to do as we head into Friday and look towards the weekend!

USM26 is rolling!

Our first shakedown is complete, and we’ve got our first few kilometres logged. Thanks to Forrestburn Hillclimb for making it possible!

This marks a huge milestone for the team as USM26 gets rolling, giving our drivers their first opportunity to drive the car, and our engineers a chance to gather data, and identify any potential issues before FSUK in two weeks time!
