New research from the University of Glasgow has found that many commercially available baby food pouches may be more like sugary drinks or smoothies than nutritious complementary foods. 👶🍼

The study, published in Archives of Disease in Childhood, analysed 298 commercially available baby food products found in six large Glasgow supermarkets.

Researchers found that 60% were spouted pouches, with many:
• Having a higher sugar content than breast milk
• Being lower in energy and nutrient density
• Having a liquid texture that may not help babies develop the skills needed to eat solid foods

Just 8.5% of the spouted pouches assessed met all the criteria researchers considered important for complementary feeding.

Led by Dr Ada Garcia, the researchers are calling for a review of how these products are categorised and labelled, helping parents make informed choices in line with public health recommendations.

How does the brain respond to rewards? 🧠

At , our researchers Dr Joana Carvalheiro, Professor Marios Philiastides and Dr Shajan Gunamony are exploring how the brain processes anticipation and value.

Using simultaneous EEG and 7 Tesla fMRI, the team is uncovering how different brain signals shape motivation and decision-making, with important implications for understanding mental health conditions such as addiction.

🦠 Supporting the response to the current Ebola outbreak

Research from the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) is helping support efforts to tackle the current Ebola outbreak in Uganda.

Professor Emma Thomson, Director of the CVR, spoke to BBC Radio Scotland about the Centre’s contribution to the response.

Researchers are studying immune responses to the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola using stored samples from people who have previously received an Ebola vaccine. This is helping assess whether vaccines developed against the Zaire strain are likely to provide protection against the current strain.

The CVR is also monitoring wastewater samples from border areas of Uganda, including samples from schools, hospitals and transport hubs, to look for signs of Ebola virus.

This work, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), highlights the important role of research and surveillance in responding to emerging infectious disease outbreaks.
