We are an energetic and innovative department which delivers broad-based education and research of relevance to meet industrial and commercial needs.

The Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management focusses on research excellence, effective industrial partnerships and creative engineering education. The Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management focuses on research excellence, effective industrial partnerships and creative engineering education. We are concerned with making organisations perform better through product, process and business development. Our fields of expertise range from product and design engineering, through manufacturing and supply, to the management of the entire value chain. Meeting the needs of tomorrow’s world requires innovation and ingenuity, a sound understanding of technology and business, the skills to organise and direct and the vision and determination to lead. These are just some of the attributes and capabilities developed through our exciting and challenging undergraduate and postgraduate programmes designed to develop tomorrow’s industry and business leaders. Development of interpersonal, presentation, management, leadership and entrepreneurial skills, through group activities and integrating studies, is an integral feature of all programmes.

Congratulations to our students on an outstanding achievement in the IMechE Design Challenge 2026.

In May, PhD student Alex Dixon and Year 2 Product Design Innovation student Leo Randall Brown won the Advanced Challenge at the Scottish Regional Final, held on 22 May 2026.

Building on that success, Pashmin Tampal (Year 3, PDI), Aidan Taylor (Year 4, PDE), Katie Burns (Year 5, PDE), and Grace Ferry (Year 3, PDE) took the project forward to the UK National Final in London, where they were awarded the Best Poster Prize in October 2026.

This achievement highlights the creativity, teamwork and engineering excellence of our students, from initial concept development through to national-level competition success. And a special thanks to the DMEM staff who have supported the students' success. Congratulations to everyone involved!

This week, DMEM kicked off its MADE on Wednesdays sessions, with a Sketching Skills workshop led by Emma Lawrie. There were live demonstrations on sketching basics, thumbnails, 2D drawings, 2-point perspective, how to make your sketches stand out, and how to find inspiration! It was great to see so many students attending and producing some excellent work. Remember, it's all about practice!

Each week MADE will cover a different engineering design topic as an extracurricular for students of the department. We hope to see you there!

Today, Design HOPES and PhD Student Kieran Gunn are presenting outcomes of their research projects at Fusion Fest 2026, an even to connect Glasgow's creative and tech sectors.

Design Hopes are presenting Mosaic Landscapes, a structured way to bring communities, professionals, and stakeholders to work together, moving beyond consultation towards collaboration. Learn more here: https://designhopes.org/project/land-use

Kieran Gunn is presenting a tool created as a part of his PhD, allowing design teams to invite an AI team member into the design process. It also acts as a platform to allow for design teamwork and AI research.

Both demonstrate the impactful research DMEM delivers.

We are delighted to announce Professor Andrew Sherlock, CEO of the Arrol Gibb Innovation Campus, as a keynote speaker at the 𝟱𝘁𝗵 𝗟𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗟𝗲𝗼𝗖𝗼𝗻) on Monday 31 August 2026 at the University of Strathclyde.

The Leonardo Conference returns!

We’re delighted to announce the 5th edition of the Leonardo Conference, taking place on Monday 31 August 2026 at the University of Strathclyde.

The Leonardo Conference is a one-day celebration of postgraduate research in Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management, showcasing the breadth and impact of our research through presentations, posters and a 3-Minute Thesis competition.

The Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management (DMEM) was proud to have a strong presence at the Design Research Society (DRS) Conference 2026, one of the world's leading forums for design research.

Our staff and researchers contributed across a diverse range of topics, with seven conference papers accepted for presentation covering: Mental health and wellbeing, Sketching and generative AI, User-centred design, Entrepreneurship, Healthcare, local innovation ecosystems and emotional design. This breadth of participation reflects the vitality and impact of design research within DMEM.

In addition, DMEM colleagues provided leadership within the conference programme as Track Chairs for: Making with Care: Artefacts and Practices, and Strategic Design Practices for Learning, Attention, and Co-Creation

The department and DesignHOPES contributed to the wider DRS community by hosting the DRS P.S! Fringe Event, supporting further discussion, collaboration and engagement beyond the main conference programme.

As graduation season comes to a close, we wanted to share a huge congratulations to all of our graduates on reaching this significant milestone.
