Meeting the needs of tomorrow’s world requires innovation and ingenuity, a sound understanding of technology and business, the skills to organise and direct and the vision and determination to lead. These are just some of the attributes and capabilities developed through our exciting and challenging undergraduate and postgraduate programmes designed to develop tomorrow’s industry and business leaders. Development of interpersonal, presentation, management, leadership and entrepreneurial skills, through group activities and integrating studies, is an integral feature of all programmes.

A world-leading authority on remanufacturing and the circular economy, Winifred leads the UK's largest remanufacturing research group at Strathclyde's DMEM and founded both the Journal of Remanufacturing and the International Conference on Remanufacturing. We are delighted to announce Dr Abi Hird, Founder and Director of Defankle Innovation, as a keynote speaker at the 𝟱𝘁𝗵 𝗟𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗟𝗲𝗼𝗖𝗼𝗻) on Monday 31 August 2026 at the University of Strathclyde.

A Strathclyde graduate in Product Design Engineering with a Doctorate in Systems Engineering, Abi has worked with over a thousand businesses to turn the uncertainty of innovation into structured, practical decisions. The Leonardo Conference returns!

We’re delighted to announce the 5th edition of the Leonardo Conference, taking place on Monday 31 August 2026 at the University of Strathclyde.

The Leonardo Conference is a one-day celebration of postgraduate research in Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management, showcasing the breadth and impact of our research through presentations, posters and a 3-Minute Thesis competition.

We’re also pleased to welcome three outstanding keynote speakers: Dr Abi Hird, Prof Andrew Sherlock and Prof Winifred Ijomah.

The Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management (DMEM) was proud to have a strong presence at the Design Research Society (DRS) Conference 2026, one of the world's leading forums for design research.

Our staff and researchers contributed across a diverse range of topics, with seven conference papers accepted for presentation covering: Mental health and wellbeing, Sketching and generative AI, User-centred design, Entrepreneurship, Healthcare, local innovation ecosystems and emotional design. This breadth of participation reflects the vitality and impact of design research within DMEM.

In addition, DMEM colleagues provided leadership within the conference programme as Track Chairs for: Making with Care: Artefacts and Practices, and Strategic Design Practices for Learning, Attention, and Co-Creation

The department and DesignHOPES contributed to the wider DRS community by hosting the DRS P.S! Fringe Event, supporting further discussion, collaboration and engagement beyond the main conference programme.

As graduation season comes to a close, we wanted to share a huge congratulations to all of our graduates on reaching this significant milestone. Graduation marks the culmination of years of hard work, dedication and achievement, and we are incredibly proud of everything our students have accomplished during their time with the Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management (DMEM).

Following the University graduation ceremony, we were delighted to host our annual DMEM Awards Celebration, bringing together graduates, friends, family members and staff to recognise outstanding achievements across our programmes. DMEM hosted a fantastic celebration of entrepreneurship and innovation!

We were delighted to welcome a packed audience of students, alumni and industry partners. The enthusiasm, engagement and networking throughout the evening highlighted the vibrant entrepreneurial community that exists within and around DMEM.

The Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management (DMEM) at the University of Strathclyde is pleased to announce that we are now accepting proposals for its 2026–27 Industrial Projects Scheme.

For over 20 years, the Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management (DMEM)’s flagship Industrial Group Projects (IGP) have connected senior undergraduate students with public and industry partners to tackle real-world design and manufacturing challenges. Past projects have explored themes including health & wellbeing, net zero, resilience, and novel engineering solutions.

Our final-year students and student teams from the following degrees bring fresh insights and skills to your current challenges and strategic goals:

Congratulations to Grace McElroy, PDI 4th year, who was awarded the Hammermen David K Harrison Award as part of the Engineering Professors' Council, Engineering Academics Network Congress held at the University of Strathclyde Learning and Teaching Building.

Grace was shortlisted from 40 submissions across 15 universities, with the final vote by delegates of the conference on the poster presentation.

Also shortlisted for the final poster presentation was Rikvit Sharma, MSc Design Engineering graduate, class of 2022.

Congratulations to them both, who received a Hammermen medal at the ceremony in Merchants House, Glasgow.

The Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management (DMEM) was proud to contribute to the 19th International Design Conference (DESIGN2026), participating in a week of discussion, collaboration, and exchange with the international design research community.

During the conference, DMEM researchers shared work across a wide range of topics, including healthcare design, systems thinking, and design education, as well as emerging areas such as AI, robotics, and advanced manufacturing. Together, these contributions highlighted the breadth of research taking place within the department and reflected DMEM’s continued interest in addressing current and future challenges in design.

Over the course of the week, DMEM colleagues delivered six papers and presentations, led three workshops, and took on key leadership roles as session and meeting chairs during three sessions.

We extend our congratulations to everyone involved in making DESIGN2026 such a success. The energy, openness, and collaboration throughout the event highlighted the strength and ambition of the international design community.

Returning to Strathclyde, we look forward to building on these connections and continuing to drive forward impactful research and education in design.
