Research into the Ageing Brain at the University of Glasgow

Research into the Ageing Brain at the University of Glasgow We are looking for participants aged 30+ for a series of experiments investigating emotion perception. Contact [email protected] for more details.

It is estimated that, by 2060, one quarter of the British population will be over 65, many of whom may still be working. The brain ages as dramatically as the body over a lifetime, but despite this relatively little is known about how this might affect us. We do know that one thing affected is how our brain deals with social interaction, but we want to know why this is and what this may mean for a

ll our futures. While it is known that the face carries a lot of social information, most research on how the brain processes of faces has been done with static images. Thanks to recent developments in 4 dimensional (4-D) graphics, we can use more realistic images to help us with our research. Here at the UoG School of Psychology we want to put together a database of 3D scanned faces of all ages that can be used as a resource for several researchers in the department. Capturing a face takes ~10 seconds and participants are asked to complete a heritage questionnaire so we can see what their cultural background is. The whole process is really quick and the faces captured could be used to help in our research- you could even take home a picture of your 3D face if you fancy! Students around 20-25 are in abundance at Glasgow Uni, as you can imagine, but really people over 50 that we’d like to capture now. So if you, or anyone you know is interested please hit ‘Like’ and share with your friends!

For the reverse correlation experiment, we added to a single base face random Gabor noise generated with random amplitudes of Gabor filters that recursively tiled the image across six spatial scales. Mental Representations: we averaged the mental representations across younger and older participants…
