Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Welcome to the Official page of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Department. It is by far the largest of its type in Scotland.

There are around 500 undergraduate and 130 postgraduate students in the department and around 100 academic, research, administrative and technical staff. It has the highest independently assessed standing in its discipline in Scotland for both teaching and research. The staff complement covers a wide range of expertise and this is reflected in the research profile and in the portfolio of specialist MEng courses.

Last week, we were delighted to host Outduction 2026, a careers-focused workshop during induction week designed to support our final-year students as they prepare for the transition from university into professional practice.

The session provided valuable insights into what employers are looking for in graduates, what to expect when moving from higher education into the workplace, and practical advice on CVs, cover letters, interviews, networking, and building professional confidence.

A particular highlight was hearing directly from our industry guest speakers, who shared their experiences and perspectives on recruitment, career development, and life in industry. Students also had the opportunity to take part in an interactive interview practice session and ask questions about graduate opportunities.

A huge thank you to our guest speakers from Arup, IMECHE and Subsea7 for generously giving their time, expertise, and encouragement to our students. Your contributions helped make the session both engaging and impactful.

We look forward to seeing our final-year students take the next steps in their careers and wish them every success for the future

Our Level 5 module introduction session aimed to support our Year 5 and PGT students elective and curriculum choices for the coming academic year.

Following a series of short module introductions from our module leaders, students had the opportunity to engage in a poster networking session, ask questions, and explore the diverse range of learning opportunities available to them.

A great afternoon of discussion and student engagement—thank you to all colleagues who contributed to the event's success.
