Looking to gain experience supporting young people? Want to make a difference to the lives of Young Carers?

This pilot project is aimed at young people up to the age of 25 who provide unpaid care for someone in their family or who are impacted by levels of care to someone in their family with additional need. Glasgow NW Carers Service has identified a need for increased mental health and emotional support for this group. A Volunteer Peer Mentor, ideally between the age of 18-25, plays a vital role in supporting individuals through guidance, encouragement, and shared experiences. This position is designed for those who are passionate about helping others, fostering personal growth, and building a sense of community. At a similar stage of life to the young person, peer mentors act as role models, offering practical and emotional support.

Congratulations to Aanuoluwa Joseph Akindolani, an MSc Medical Bioscience student, on successfully completing the GCU Employability Award. What a milestone to celebrate 🏅

He undertook three key activities to earn the GCU Employability Award: working as a brand management intern for a travel agency, working at Manufacturing Partnering Group club and events on global partnerships, and contributing as a member of the Local Organizing Committee for the Nigerian Association of Microbiology Students.

Aanuoluwa Joseph has shared with our team his reflections on what motivated him to apply for the Award, and the ways in which the experience has supported his development:

“I applied for the award because I wanted to show the experiences I have gained beyond my academic studies, including leadership, volunteering, internships, and community engagement. This process encouraged me to identify the value of the skills I have developed through these experiences, such as communication, teamwork, project management, and cultural awareness. The Award has increased my confidence in applying my skills within future professional environments.”

➡️The GCU Employability Award is GCU’s employability and skills award run by the Careers Service, which aims to encourage, support and reward students engaged in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Congratulations to Vinathi Thota, an MSc Advanced Practice student, on completing the GCU Employability Award! 🏅

To achieve the award, she took part in Career Mentoring and Student Leaders Programmes, volunteered her time at Community Sports, and worked as a Retail Assistant.

Vinathi reflects on her experience:

“As an international student at Glasgow Caledonian University, I wanted my experience in the UK to be about more than just academics. I was looking for opportunities that would help me grow both personally and professionally, which led me to the GCU Employability Award. The experiences strengthened my communication, teamwork, adaptability, and time-management skills while increasing my confidence and career readiness. The award has helped me reflect on my journey, recognise my growth, and prepare for future opportunities in healthcare. I am sincerely grateful to the GCU Careers Team for their support and to my family, and well-wishers whose encouragement has helped me achieve this milestone.
