The Dialectic Society is a student organisation at the University of Glasgow and the oldest of its kind in the world. It was officially re-instituted in 1861, though there exist records of the society dating back to 1770 and claims that it was established in 1451 in a Papal Bull. Whilst being an ancient society our goal of promoting and fostering public discussion within the university has remained constant. The society has the duty of organising a variety of traditional events throughout term time. These range from formal social events such as our Annual Dinners, to grand showcase debates including the Honorary President’s Debate and the Inter-board Debate. Throughout the year, we host a number of socials, talks, and competitions. Recent speakers include MP Mhari Black, Councillor Graham Campbell, Women Wage Peace, and Raise. Apart from sticking to our old traditions the society strides diligently to make new marks on campus. In the past years we have organised our 150th Anniversary Dinner with an exhibition and debate, and organised the first of its kind and the first in Scotland University Scottish Independence Referendum, which received national media coverage.

This role involves overseeing clerical and administrative tasks in the society and organising some of our larger events, and (unofficially) watching the publicity secretary work wistfully from afar. As mother of our honorary vice president we know she’s committed to the life blood of this society and we can’t wait to see what updates (and outfits) she brings to dialectics this year!
