The Edinburgh University Debates Union (EUDU) is one of the oldest debating unions in the world.

As announced this Tuesday at 7pm in the West Reading Room before our regular workshop we will be hosting an EGM to fill vacant positions in the Union. If you're interested in running please fill out the form before noon tomorrow. Those running for WGM, Equity and Freshers Rep will give a 1 minute speech. In addition to this we are recruiting people to help with public events. Public events and Equity are non committee positions.

Come along instead to our next public debate against the Glasgow University Union next Wednesday 14th October, with doors opening at 20:30.

Our first varsity debate of the semester is taking place next Wednesday 14th October in Teviot Debating Hall, with doors opening at 20:30pm.

Joined by some of Glasgow University Union’s most illustrious speakers, we shall tackle this controversial motion.

Our lovely member Anna speaking for the government side in our WGM debate from Freshers week, where we discussed the motion “This House Would move to a women only island nation”.

Our first public debate of the semester is taking place this Wednesday 30th September at 20:15pm, and we are using it to honour our roots, arguing the motion ‘This House Believes that individual liberty cannot exist under democracy’.

The Edinburgh University Women’s Debate Union discussed this over 100 years ago, and we are so excited to see how our current students interpret this motion. Members of the Women’s Debate Union were hugely influential, becoming significant figures in the suffrage movement, health, and education. They also impacted the world beyond Edinburgh, for example member Eliza Wigham was a notable anti-slavery campaigner and suffragist who took her work from Edinburgh across the UK and beyond.

The inaugural debate of the 136th session of the Edinburgh University Debates Union is occurring in the Teviot Debate Chamber at 20:15pm on Wednesday 30th September with the motion titled: This House Believes that individual liberty cannot exist in democracy.

Exactly 100 years ago in 1926, the Edinburgh Women’s Debate Union debated this precise motion, and we are so excited to honour this history and see how the perspective of Edinburgh students has changed over the century. We will have exciting speakers debating the motion, such as the NUMBER ONE active speaker from the recent European Debates Championships Zainab Sardar!

Come along with us to Liverpool for a debate competition…

Our Edinburgh student debaters had a very successful weekend - with all speakers and judges breaking into finals and some of our speakers winning their respective finals!

We also explored the sights of sunny Liverpool and enjoyed the city’s nightlife.

Congratulations to everyone from EUDU who attended Liverpool IV this weekend, a one-day competition where Edinburgh gained some very impressive results, hosted by 🐦‍🔥

Firstly, well done to the Edinburgh speakers, all of whom broke! In the Open Finals, Ben and Wurdaan broke 1st, Aymann broke 2nd, Zainab broke 5th, Josh broke 6th, and Zohha and Andie broke 8th, and Josh went on to win the Silver Final! 🏆

In the Pro-Am Finals Tessa and Josie broke 1st, and Anna and Helen both broke as judges, with Helen also acting as Access Officer. ⚖️

Regarding speaker points, Wurdaan was the 3rd best open speaker, Zainab and Josh 4th, Aymaan 6th, and 8th. 🥇

Zohha was the best novice speaker, Andie 2nd, Tessa 3rd, and Josie 5th. 🎓

The EUDU cohort also enjoyed the Liverpool nightlife and the city’s main attractions. 🪩
