Some highlights from last week's technology-focused STEM engagement event delivered on our campus in partnership with SmartSTEMs and Atos. ⚙️

The event brought together 410 pupils aged 10 to 14 from schools across central Scotland for a day of interactive workshops, hands-on activities and inspiring talks designed to showcase the exciting opportunities available through science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Glasgow Caledonian University will recognise seven distinguished individuals for their exceptional achievements at its summer graduation ceremonies, taking place on 30 June, 1 and 2 July 2026 at Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall. 🎓

Those to receive honorary doctorates are Rob Woodward CBE FRSE, Dr Cor Hutton MBE, Robert McNeil MBE, Jane Shepherdson CBE, Callum Baird, Ian Beattie MBE and Enoch Adeyemi. 👏

Their achievements span business, media, sport, fashion, charity and community leadership, reflecting the University’s commitment to the common good. 💙

Glasgow Caledonian University welcomed hundreds of young people, teachers and industry professionals to campus for a major technology-focused STEM engagement event delivered in partnership with SmartSTEMs and Atos. 🤝

The event brought together 410 pupils aged 10 to 14 from schools across central Scotland for a day of interactive workshops, hands-on activities and inspiring talks designed to showcase the exciting opportunities available through science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). ⚙️

Held at the University's Glasgow campus, the event encouraged young people to explore technology-related careers while giving teachers and learning assistants the opportunity to connect with industry representatives and discover new ways to engage pupils with STEM subjects. 🧪

Throughout the day, participants took part in a series of workshops led by professionals from industry, education and the public sector. Activities covered a wide range of technology themes and gave pupils the chance to learn directly from people working in STEM careers. 💡

Dr Salma Darwish Mohamed, Lecturer, Department of Computer Science at Glasgow Caledonian University, said: "It was fantastic to welcome so many young people, teachers and industry partners to our campus. Events like this give pupils the opportunity to engage directly with STEM professionals, explore future career possibilities and develop a greater understanding of the opportunities available to them.

"The enthusiasm, creativity and curiosity shown throughout the day was inspiring to see, and we were delighted to work alongside SmartSTEMs and Atos to deliver the event. 💬

"Supporting initiatives that widen participation, promote innovation and inspire the next generation of STEM talent is central to Glasgow Caledonian University's mission."

Stuart Macdonald, CEO and Founder of SmartSTEMs, said: “We are delighted to partner Glasgow Caledonian University once again to deliver our flagship Hub event. We were joined by almost 500 young people in P6-S2 from schools across Glasgow and surrounding areas for an exciting array of interactive workshops and hands-on activities. These Hub events put pupils first and give them the opportunity to explore real-world applications of STEM, learn from inspiring industry role-models, and allow pupils to see STEM as a place for them.”

GCU Fashion Showcase returned to campus in spectacular style to celebrate the best fashion design and creative work from students on our industry-linked courses. 🎉

The 2026 catwalk collection included outfits from industry collaborations with Kestin Bernat Klein and the award-winning kilt and highland wear specialist MacGregor and MacDuff. 🤝

A creative exhibition also showcased work by our International Fashion Branding students for industry partner New Balance. 👟

Introducing the show, Dr Tessa Hartmann, chair of the University's Fashion Advisory Board, which informs Glasgow Caledonian’s distinctive portfolio of fashion business and luxury programmes, said: "It's always my privilege to be part of this spectacular event. Every time the board members come here, we are blown away by the level of creativity.

"We see a lot of collections around the world, but this is something quite special." 💬

Audiences at the afternoon and evening performances heard from some of the student designers ahead of the runway show. 👚

Professor Shirley Rate, Dean of Glasgow School for Business and Society, said: "What an incredible event. Thank you so much to our students; they are fabulous, and I am absolutely bursting with pride.

"We have a huge number of industry partners who help our staff support our students - in the classroom, when they're teaching and also when we are assessing our students. On behalf of the University, I want to say a sincere thank you for their continued support." 👏

Earlier in the day, our Fashion Advisory Board members held a masterclass for GCU students and members of the University's GCU Entrepreneurial Hub.

Dr Hartmann, Dr Jonathan Chippindale, and Dr Mark Hogarth offered valuable insights into sustainability, digital innovation, luxury, and brand storytelling.

A huge thank you to our industry partners, including MacGregor and MacDuff, New Balance, Kestin, Forty Clothing, Bee Inspired, ShowBoat, Lochcarron of Scotland, and The Materialist who all supported the work on show.
