Happy (official) birthday Great Yarmouth Library!

On this day last year, we had our official opening of the brand new Great Yarmouth Library, located in 'The Place'. Situated in the heart of Great Yarmouth, The Place was better known for many years as Palmers - a family-run department store and community hub, serving generations of residents.

Following the store's closure in 2020 (having been previously acquired by department store chain Beales), the building was bought by Great Yarmouth Borough Council. The aim was to turn it into a single, high-profile building in the centre of Great Yarmouth - a plan which included relocating the town's library from it's base on Tolhouse Street.

And the new library is just one part of this wonderful facility. It's also home to registration services, Adult Learning and higher education courses thanks to East Coast College and the University of Suffolk!

It's been a fantastic year, which has seen library use increase significantly since we've made the move to a town centre location. We'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has used the library, whether it's for books, events, or just a nice place to stop by. Here's to the next birthday, and the next birthday, and many many more birthdays!
