Oil has surged past $90 a barrel after two tankers were struck in the Strait of Hormuz, reigniting US-Iran tensions.

Global bond yields have climbed to their highest since 2008.

Markets are now pricing in a stronger chance of a Fed rate rise this month, and gold is falling rather than rising on the news, a sign that rate expectations are currently outweighing safe haven demand.

Two big stories are moving markets this morning 👇

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh struck a hawkish tone on Friday, lifting expectations for a September rate hike.

Overnight, a US strike on Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz reignited Middle East tensions 🚨

Gold has pulled back, oil has jumped 📉📈, and it’s setting up a big week of data before Friday’s jobs report.

Gold is holding on to most of this week's rally to a 10-week high, and the story underneath is more layered than "safe haven demand" 📈

Softer US jobs data has traders dialling back Fed rate hike expectations, which lowers the cost of holding an asset that pays no interest. At the same time, Strait of Hormuz tension, a North Korea missile launch and reported Houthi attacks on shipping are all keeping risk elevated, which cuts both ways for gold depending on whether inflation fears or safe haven flows are winning that day.

Here's the part traders should not skip: gold just posted its most overbought reading since March. That does not mean a drop is coming, but it does mean the odds of a sharp move either way have gone up.

🛢️ Oil turned higher on Monday.

Hopes of a quick Hormuz reopening drove both benchmarks down more than 7% last week 📉. Those hopes have cooled after Iran attached further conditions.

Energy costs feed straight into the inflation picture, and US CPI is out on Wednesday 🗓️.

All eyes on the US jobs report today, out at 13:30 BST 📊

Economists expect a modest gain of around 80,000 to 83,000 new roles, with unemployment holding at 4.2%.

Here is what makes this one different. The Fed split 9 to 3 last month, with three officials voting for a rate rise instead of a hold. It was the first three-way split in the same direction since 2016.

The Chair has also scrapped forward guidance, which leaves the data to set the tone ahead of the September meeting.

Gold is having a moment. 🟡📈

Four straight days of gains have pushed it to its highest level in seven weeks, as hopes for a Strait of Hormuz reopening ease inflation fears and cool expectations for further Fed rate hikes.

A softer US dollar and weak US jobs data are adding to the momentum, making this one of the standout markets to watch today.

Two of the biggest names in AI reported this week. Both beat forecasts. Both fell. 📉

AMD posted record revenue, up 50% year on year, beat on profit, and raised guidance for the next quarter. Shares fell 8.8% after hours.

SpaceX grew revenue 92% in its first report since listing and lost less than expected. Shares fell 7.5%.

When a stock has already run hard, a beat isn't always enough.

🌍 A big week ahead for global markets.

Crude dropped as much as 7% in Asian trade after fresh US-Iran talks were confirmed and OPEC+ nudged production quotas higher again. 🛢️

But it is the calendar that gives this week its shape:

🚀 Tuesday: SpaceX reports, its first results since June's listing

📉 Thursday: a lock-up expiry releases more than 900 million pre-IPO SpaceX shares

📊 Friday: the US jobs report, after June's reading came in at roughly half of what was expected

💻 Through the week: Palantir, AMD, Caterpillar and HSBC also report

Three storylines, one week. Which are you watching? 👀

All eyes on Big Tech this week 👀

Yesterday brought two of the biggest earnings reports of the quarter. Microsoft delivered, with Azure crossing $100 billion in annual revenue for the first time and cloud growth beating expectations. Meta didn't get the same reception, with profit falling short and next quarter's guidance landing softer than hoped.

Now it's Apple and Amazon's turn, both reporting after today's close.

Same AI investment race, different reactions so far. Traders will be watching closely to see which way today's results tip the balance. What's on your radar? 👇

Same week, two completely different stories. 📊

Samsung just posted their worst day in years, down over 13%, as fears grow over Chinese competition in memory chips.

Apple, meanwhile, briefly hit a $5 trillion valuation, only the second company ever to get there, partly because investors are rewarding it for staying out of the heavy AI spending race.

On top of that: Iran struck US forces overnight, ending the recent pause, and the Fed decides rates this afternoon in what's shaping up to be a genuinely close call.

A packed session. 👀
