This World Space Week, we’re celebrating University of Surrey alumnus Doug Sinclair, who has spent his career helping small satellites make a big impact.

After completing his MSc in Satellite Engineering at Surrey in 1998, Doug went on to found Sinclair Interplanetary, a company that designed specialist spacecraft hardware used on more than 100 satellites. His work has contributed to missions and technologies including NASA’s CAPSTONE lunar mission and emergency messaging from the iPhone 14.

In our latest alumni spotlight, Doug reflects on his time at Surrey, building a space hardware business, mentoring future entrepreneurs, and why curiosity continues to drive his career.
Doug recently visited campus, where he met with Surrey Space Institute staff, and students from Peryton Space, the University’s Rocketry and Space Society.

❤️ Love started at Surrey

We're delighted to celebrate the love story of Surrey alumni Dr Xin Yang (PhD Electronic Engineering, 2019) and Yan Zhu (BSc International Events Management, 2020, who will be getting married next week. Although they arrived in Guildford years apart as international students, their journeys eventually crossed at the University of Surrey, where they both immersed themselves in university life, both serving as Presidents of the Chinese Society and making lifelong memories on campus as Students’ Union reps and Student Ambassadors.
Now, the place where their story began has become part of a new chapter as they prepare to say "I do".

The alumni team recently joined the University of Surrey’s Beekeeping project to help harvest honey from the campus hives 🍯

Working alongside staff volunteers and students in the Lakeside Restaurant kitchen, members of the alumni team helped slice wax from the frames, place them into the honey extractor, filter the honey and jar it ready for sale.

The extractor was funded through the Forever Surrey Fund, and proceeds from the honey sales help keep the project going. As well as supporting biodiversity on campus, the project creates valuable research opportunities for PhD students at the University.

It’s a wonderful example of how donations can support practical, high-impact initiatives across campus.
