We are pleased to announce that Film and TV Lecturer Howard Berry is having a special screening and Q&A of his feature documentary at the Prince Charles Cinema in London, on Thursday 14 May, at 18:00.
🎬🎞️ Her Name Was Moviola reconstructs a 35mm film cutting room at Elstree and takes viewers through the editing of two scenes from Mike Leigh’s Mr. Turner — from rushes and separate sound recordings to the completed edit — using a Moviola, the 100-year-old machine that underpinned most 20th-century film editing practice. Throughout, the techniques and creative decision-making are explored in detail. Acclaimed film editor and sound designer Walter Murch (The Conversation, Apocalypse Now), alongside his assistant Dan Farrell, demonstrates the now largely lost techniques of manual film and assistant editing. The film culminates with a review at Stanley Kubrick’s home, where Mike Leigh reflects on the work.
The film will be followed by a Q&A where Howard will be discussing the reconstruction with Walter Murch.
The film recently won an RTS Programme award for Best Craft Editing, as well as Best Practice-Based Research at the 2025 MECCSA conference.
