Last week, our BA (Hons) Film and Television students celebrated their Graduate Screening Day at the Odyssey Cinema in St Albans.

It was a fantastic opportunity for students and staff to view each other’s projects on the big screen and celebrate the creativity and hard work behind them.

Congratulations to everyone involved!

As we approach the end of the year, many of our students are now getting ready for their final semester!

Our MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) students recently had their last teaching class before starting their dissertations and in honour of their lecturers and classmates they recorded these lovely messages as a thank you!

The MA TESOL is designed for graduates in English, education, or languages, particularly those with little or no teaching experience who want practical postgraduate training in English language teaching.

Thank you for all your hard work this year and good luck with your dissertations!

We are pleased to announce that Film and TV Lecturer Howard Berry is having a special screening and Q&A of his feature documentary at the Prince Charles Cinema in London, on Thursday 14 May, at 18:00.

🎬🎞️ Her Name Was Moviola reconstructs a 35mm film cutting room at Elstree and takes viewers through the editing of two scenes from Mike Leigh’s Mr. Turner — from rushes and separate sound recordings to the completed edit — using a Moviola, the 100-year-old machine that underpinned most 20th-century film editing practice. Throughout, the techniques and creative decision-making are explored in detail. Acclaimed film editor and sound designer Walter Murch (The Conversation, Apocalypse Now), alongside his assistant Dan Farrell, demonstrates the now largely lost techniques of manual film and assistant editing. The film culminates with a review at Stanley Kubrick’s home, where Mike Leigh reflects on the work.

The film will be followed by a Q&A where Howard will be discussing the reconstruction with Walter Murch.

The film recently won an RTS Programme award for Best Craft Editing, as well as Best Practice-Based Research at the 2025 MECCSA conference.

Our MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages cohort recently had a lunch together for their final workshop before moving into Semester C and starting their dissertations! 📖

It was such a lovely opportunity for the students to come together with their lecturers and celebrate all of their hard work.

We hope that your final semester is just as successful and rewarding! 💫

Last week our BA (Hons) Film & TV Production students attended a networking event organised by Hertfordshire Film Office . 🎥

Students had an opportunity to meet guest speakers from Elstree Immersive Experience, All Spring Media and This Is Icon, and connect with young filmmakers in the industry.

This was a brilliant opportunity for our students to network and make new connections, as they look forward to starting their careers after graduation!

📚 Our first-year BA (Hons) English Literature students were treated to a masterclass by poet Will Harris. He is the author of ‘Rendang’ and ‘Brother Poem’, Forward Prize winner, and T.S. Eliot Prize short listee. Will took students from Russian Formalist theories of fabula to the charged silence of the comic-book gutter, tracing the gaps and elisions through which storytelling does its most essential work.

Will led his masterclass as part of the School of Creative Arts’ Visiting Writer Programme, which each year invites three award-winning writers to work closely with students across the full range of creative disciplines; from poetry and fiction to screenwriting, bringing practising voices from the contemporary literary world directly into the seminar room.

Uni of Herts Professor of History Tony Shaw has his latest book ‘Cold War Football’, authored with Alan McDougall coming out in June!

A gargantuan battle for hearts and minds, the Cold War is the supreme example of a ‘people’s war’. But what did the ‘people’s game’ have to do with it?

From Dynamo Moscow’s stormy tour of Britain in 1945 to the inaugural Women’s World Cup in 1991, Tony Shaw and Alan McDougall chart the clash between capitalism and communism in ten iconic football matches. They take us across Europe, Asia, South America and Africa to uncover football’s part in bolstering democracies and dictatorships and in the struggle for influence in the developing world.

Look out for its release this summer!
