Spring brings a sense of renewal - a moment to reflect, refocus and grow. 🌱

At PSQM, we’ve been doing exactly that.
👂Listening to schools.
👂Listening to the sector.
🧠Learning from our expert network.

And using all of this to take our professional learning programme to the next level.

Quick wins aren’t enough. It’s a deliberate cycle of development, strong evaluative subject leadership and a commitment to continuous improvement that transforms children’s learning in science.

Reminder to all PSQM schools! 🌟

Our RSC CPD sessions are back for the autumn term fully funded for schools by the Royal Society of Chemistry. 🎉

All schools currently engaged in the PSQM programme get access to this fully funded programme of webinars and workshops, offered in addition to the main PSQM programme.

These sessions are designed to deepen understanding of primary science, provide practical ideas, and support subject leaders and whole-school development.

Our interactive workshops provide a programme of professional learning opportunities linked to the Primary Science Quality Framework. These sessions will deepen understanding of specific areas and provide ideas for activities and strategies to use in school.

Our programme of webinars features a range of expert speakers who will be sharing their latest thinking in primary science education on a range of topics. Each session will consist of a 45- minute presentation followed by a short question and answer session.

Alongside live sessions, don’t forget the Pockets and Spotlights available on the Virtual Learning Environment. These are pre-recorded resources ready to watch, use, and download whenever suits you.

👉 To book onto this term’s workshops and webinars, simply head to the Virtual Learning Environment to find the booking link.

A huge thank you to the Royal Society of Chemistry for funding this additional programme and helping us support even more schools. 🙌

This is a fantastic opportunity for the science subject leaders and whole staff team to get involved in professional learning for science education through live, online webinars and workshops.

Yesterday a report funded by the Primary Science Teaching Trust (PSTT), The Ogden Trust and SEERIH Manchester (The University of Manchester), and supported by the The Comino Foundation was published - ‘The State of Primary Science in the UK’. As a member organisation of the UK Primary Science Education Group, PSQM is pleased to have shared expertise which supported the commissioning of this report.

You can read the full report here: https://pstt.org.uk/theory-practice/state-of-primary-science-in-the-uk-2025/

Drawing on responses from more than 1,200 subject leaders and teachers, this is the first large-scale review of primary science since 2017.

Key findings include:

⭐ More schools than before now have a designated science leader.

⭐ Weekly science teaching is happening in most schools.

⭐ However: confidence in teaching science has fallen, and access to mentoring and high-quality CPD remains limited.

Most importantly, the report shows a strong link between having a science leader and increased teaching time, professional support, resources, enrichment opportunities and a positive culture for science.

For PSQM schools, this is great news. It clearly demonstrates the impact of strong, knowledgeable and well-supported leadership in primary science and the report’s recommendations align closely with the PSQM framework.
