Sunday morning nest cam footage of Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos) Amber listed for conservation with BTO showing a decline of 46% 1967-2023, a species that lives up to name, a fantastic song, has the folkname of Mavis.

On the fabulous North East coast the arrival of the Little Tern (Sternula albifrons) is being celebrated and things are starting to look good.
Like all ground nesting birds Little Terns are vulnerable to disturbance and predation, both are tricky to manage when the chosen nesting area is a busy seaside town with a tourist trade.

Amber listed for conservation and a schedule 1 species.

We came under some criticism when we showed a Stoat predating a Robin, yet the BBC Springwatch team got all excited when a Pine Marten does the same, so we thought we would do the same as the BBC and show a repeat.

Not all conservation projects are in the countryside, as you can see this one has a fair share of occupied houses, the fence is to keep out an apex predator and prevent them disturbing a rare ground nesting bird, that predator is the dog walker and to some extent it does deter the Fox, though they can easily clear it if they wanted.
Lethal predator control would not be an option here.

Scorching hot weekend on the beach, to miss the heat an early morning visit gave us the fantastic oppurtunity to witness Little Terns (Sternula albifrons) checking out nest scrapes ahead of egg laying, our smallest sea bird that has travelled back to the UK from Africa to breed, Amber listed for conservation.
Vulnerable to predation and disturbance.

HOT HOT HOT

Fabulous weather for Adders on the North York Moors.

We conider ourselves to be fortunate to be allowed to place several reptile monitoring stations in the North York Moors but with this glorious weather they can be spotted almost anywhere.

One of our favourite reptile is the Adder (Vipera berus) the UK's only venomous snake, great to see that they are doing well in areas of the moors, eyes peeled for them, they will move away but be careful were you step.

This morning was the last of our Moorland bird surveys, something we have enjoyed taking part for many decades, the data is sent to the BTO.
One thing we have noticed over those decades is the increase in the number of TICKS, small creatures that need to feed on blood, mine, yours and that of any animal in the area, they can also spread some very bad diseases that can impact the health of humans and animals, certainly worth checking when you have been out and about but remember chemicals that prevent TICKS are harmful to aquatic life.

Field of Dreams.
A few comments on our recent Curlew post stating SHEEP are the problem for Curlew!

We had a spare half hour and had a look over the wall from the heather moorland, a field of sheep, Curlew, Oystercatcher, Lapwing and Snipe seen side by side with the sheep, a Curlew chick put in an appearance, just for good measure.

Often referred to as a wading bird that adapted to woodland, the Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola) the fact is they do not need woodland.
One thing that research has shown is that more research is needed.
Methodology of counting breeding Woodcock leaves huge areas without data collection, along with several months of the Woodcock breeding season, nests often found without a tree for over a kilometre as early as March meaning huge numbers of breeding Woodcock fall outside the paramiters of traditional counts, resulting in a shortfall of data.
This wading bird is adaptable and still likes open coutryside.
