On Friday 8th May, all of our college leavers were invited to celebrate at our farewell event. The students enjoyed live music, free food and captured memories at our photobooths in the Sports Hall 💜

Food and drinks were served by our very own Principal, Catherine Brearey, and Deputy Principal, Phil Tranter 👩‍🍳🌭 Live music was performed by our Rock and Pop Academy bands Motion Sickness, Calme and Wolftone. 🎶

Congratulations and good luck to all our college leavers! We will miss you but you know where we are if you need us!

This Mental Health Awareness Week we’re asking people to join us in taking action to support good mental health. Even small actions can help us feel hopeful and less powerless. And while our individual actions matter, when we come together we are even more powerful.

This year's theme is Action because, while awareness is vital, real change comes when we take action too. Together, we’ve come a long way on mental health, but we can’t risk going backwards. There’s still much we can do to prevent people becoming unwell in the first place.

Read more here https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/our-work/public-engagement/mental-health-awareness-week and show your support at college this week by wearing GREEN this Friday! 💚

A huge thank you to a local Occupational Therapist (OT) who visited the health and social care students to explain the role of an OT, the qualifications needed and what the course is like at university. The speaker was so enthusiastic about their job and very engaging with our students. We are so grateful for their time which they have given freely.

HSFC has a long established tradition of welcoming a wide range of politicians and Pressure Groups; which allow students to hear first hand diverse opinions and arguments. Previous speakers have included, Sir Simon Henry Ward Hughes Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, and Conservative Shadow leader of the House Jesse Norman MP to name only a few.

On Thursday 16th April, it was the turn of Baroness Bennett. Natalie Bennett has a long history in the Green Party. She was the internal communications coordinator on the national executive of the party from September 2007 to August 2011. She then served as Leader of the Green Party between 2012 to 2016. She was nominated for a life peerage in September 2019 where she currently serves.

Her talk was titled: Green Politics and Philosophy: Can it Change Everything?"
She spoke for 20 minutes and as usual, the session ended with students having the opportunity to ask testing questions.

She kindly donated two books to the college: Change everything: How we can rethink, repair and rebuild society" and "Green thinking: Unlearning outdated ideas in Science, Economics & Politics". These are both now available in the library.

With close to 100 students in attendance it was a resounding success. We thank her for her kind offer of a visit and look forward to future visit.

On Monday 27th April, the Philosophy and Ethics Department along with The Debate Society, welcomed Alister McGrath to come and speak to students about the relationship between Science and Religion.

As a Fellow of Harris Manchester College, Senior Research Fellow of the Faculty of Theology at Oxford University and Professor of Divinity at Gresham College, this was a great privilege for us all. He offered students a very insightful and positive view of the relationship between science and religion, as well as connecting this with debates he has had with New Atheist thinkers like Dawkins.

It was a wonderful talk with excellent and challenging questions from our students.
