Have you spotted our new bird and bat boxes that have gone up this week?

Our lovely sustainable grounds maintenance manager Barry, has spent the last week, putting up new bird and bat boxes, all around campus.

We have even put up, some of the lovely designed houses, that were kindly donated by those that stopped by the “Build your own Bird box session” last Green Week. Can you see yours? 🐦

See how many you can spot around campus and send us your pictures! 👀

Hello all!

We wish you a very late, but happy, healthy, and productive 2024! We hope you are well and are weathering the crazy storms we have been experiencing, over the last few weeks!

We have loads of fun and engaging sustainability projects running this year (so keep your eyes peeled for those) But first, we want wanted to tell you about a little event we will be running next Wednesday 31st January in Student Central, outside the Students Union Shop from 11AM-2PM.

We are running a drop in ‘Mini Self Watering Tree Starter Session’, 🪴 💦 where we will use recycled bottles and rags to plant acorns in, to start growing into trees.

These are a lovely addition to have on your desk or study area as you can slowly watch the acorn develop its root system and then emerge as a young sapling.
Once large enough you can re-pot and grown your very own baby tree 🌲🌳

Whilst we are running the activity you will have the opportunity to talk to us about the tree planting sessions we ran over November and even better, sign up for the opportunity to take part yourself! 🌱

We still have availability for slots in the February and March sessions and would love for you to join us for a fun afternoon, where you can help reforest an area of land in our local community and increase biodiversity.

Please see more information and the booking links – in our bio! 🌳 🌳 🌳

Please do pop by on your lunch break, come say hello, and make an interesting, quirky addition for your desk! 😍

See you Wednesday!
The Sustainability Team

Wrapping Paper: Did you know Brits use 227,000 miles of wrapping paper every year, that’s around 108 million rolls! enough to wrap around the equator 9 times! When it comes to recycling your Christmas, the most important thing to do is to check with your local authority what they will accept and what they won’t - just head over to your local council’s website and you should find the info you need. Check out the website, for local information, if you live in the Kirklees area. But, if it’s not clear, drop them an e-mail or a message on social media.

Opt-out of the glittery: opt to brown paper, recycled and recyclable paper, scrap paper that you’ve decorated or even fabric wrapping using Furoshiki folding (swipe to see a Furoshiki example). Remember to save your old gift boxes and bags and skip the sticky tape and glitter where you can.

Gift an experience: Gifting an experience for your loved ones will reduce demand for physical resources. Bring people together by gifting your time or a pre-bought experience. There are lots of options to choose from that will reduce your Christmas footprint. You could buy tickets to shows, concerts or events. Gift a homemade coupon book. Make a restaurant reservation or give a gift card. Why not plan a day out to a National Trust or Wildlife Trust location, or even make a homemade meal. It also means Christmas comes twice for the receiver, when they get to go on the experience!

Think about materials: Look at the materials gifts are made from and keep sustainability in mind. Ensure wood and paper gifts are made from recycled or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified materials. Avoid single-use plastic items that can’t be recycled and look for things like Fairtrade or Organic-certified food and clothing. Buying second-hand items saves on resources needed to make new products.

Test your wrapping skills: Look for cards and wrapping paper made from recycled or FSC-certified paper. Avoid plastic ribbon and tape, or foil-backed and glittery wrapping paper. Check out some tape-free wrapping techniques such as Furoshiki. This is a traditional Japanese method.

As we head towards, our break for the festive holidays, we’ve decided to share some small tips over the next few days, that you can incorporate into your day, to make your Christmas 2023 more sustainable. Starting off, with everyone’s favourite thing over the holidays, food....

Cut your food waste: “In the United Kingdom, the average household with children discards approximately £730 of edible food each year.” Food production is the biggest cause of tropical deforestation. Try to cut any waste by planning ahead this Christmas 2023. Be realistic about how much food you need and use up leftovers. Instead of clingfilm, use Tupperware, foil and wax cloth covers to keep leftovers nice and fresh! Use this handy guide to see what foods, are freezable and save throwing this Christmas - “Can I Freeze It? | The Full Freezer”

Eat More Plants: Poultry is in the top 10 most wasted foods in the UK and 100,000 tonnes of it ends up in the bin every year. Eating more plant-based meals is good for you and the planet. The livestock industry generates 14.5% of all man-made greenhouse gas emissions. It requires huge amounts of space, water and feed. Instead, you could try a meat alternative.

Know your logos: When shopping for food, look for UK seasonal produce to reduce food miles. Search for sustainability certifications such as RSPO-certified palm oil and MSC-certified seafood. To help you, the Impact Score app (available in your app store) canshow you sustainable products in UK supermarkets.

Eat seasonally: Make your shopping basket more sustainable by buying seasonal products, locally produced where possible. Doing so reduces the energy spent growing foods out of season or flying food to the UK. Support UK farmers by eating with the seasons. Use this handy guide to see what fruits and vegetables are in season every week of the year. Check out the WWF webpage”Eat the Seasons” for more tips on eating seasonally!

Well, that’s all for today folks! We will be back tomorrow with some sustainable tips on gifting this holiday season.
