This is James Morley, a nursing apprenticeship graduate who went above and beyond to give a patient in his care one very special night to remember.
While on placement at a local hospice, James was caring for a patient receiving end-of-life care who had tickets to see a show in Halifax. James was determined that their illness shouldn’t stop them from enjoying the show.
He arranged suitable access and support at the theatre, made sure his patient could attend comfortably and with dignity, and then took it one step further.
He arranged a special meet and greet with Will Mellor and Ralf Little, the stars of '2 Pints with Will and Ralf'.
And the surprises didn’t stop there. Afterwards, Will and Ralf sent James a video message thanking him for helping to make such a memorable experience possible.
It was an act of kindness that meant an enormous amount to one person - and a wonderful example of what person-centred care can really look like.
James has now been recognised with a prestigious national Student Excellence Award from NHS England, the first learner from Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust to receive the award.
He’s also been named the University of Huddersfield’s School of Human and Health Sciences Level 5 Apprentice of the Year.
James said: “I just did it because it’s in my nature to look after people, and make people’s memories special.”
Congratulations, James! What an incredible achievement, and what a wonderful example of the difference a little extra care can make.
