"Like most first-years, I had my fair share of rookie errors. I pulled too many late nights trying to finish assignments, ditched the gym and my social life in favour of 'getting uni work done', and constantly tried (and failed) to juggle my studies with a part-time job.

"But don’t worry, it all worked out in the end. I found my rhythm, figured out what actually helps, and somehow wrapped up the year with a first!"

Psychology student Liv is heading into her second year at Huddersfield. Here she shares her advice for first years: https://hud.ac/w11

A Huddersfield academic has been sharing his expertise during workshops at the University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.

Dr Precious Adade Duodu recently helped bring together people from the UK and Ghana, as part of a long-term dementia healthcare research project led by the University.

The project is funded by the Research Investment Funding of the School of Human and Health Sciences, and builds on a growing body of evidence showing that dementia is an increasingly significant public health challenge in Ghana.

This is James Morley, a nursing apprenticeship graduate who went above and beyond to give a patient in his care one very special night to remember.

While on placement at a local hospice, James was caring for a patient receiving end-of-life care who had tickets to see a show in Halifax. James was determined that their illness shouldn’t stop them from enjoying the show.

He arranged suitable access and support at the theatre, made sure his patient could attend comfortably and with dignity, and then took it one step further.

He arranged a special meet and greet with Will Mellor and Ralf Little, the stars of '2 Pints with Will and Ralf'.

And the surprises didn’t stop there. Afterwards, Will and Ralf sent James a video message thanking him for helping to make such a memorable experience possible.

It was an act of kindness that meant an enormous amount to one person - and a wonderful example of what person-centred care can really look like.

James has now been recognised with a prestigious national Student Excellence Award from NHS England, the first learner from Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust to receive the award.

He’s also been named the University of Huddersfield’s School of Human and Health Sciences Level 5 Apprentice of the Year.

James said: “I just did it because it’s in my nature to look after people, and make people’s memories special.”

Congratulations, James! What an incredible achievement, and what a wonderful example of the difference a little extra care can make.

🎉 The University of Huddersfield has been named University of the Year for Degree Apprenticeships 2027 in the new Daily Mail University Guide.

It is the first time the guide, the latest edition of which is published online today, has presented an award for Degree Apprenticeships, making Huddersfield the first recipient.

Organisers of the guide highlighted Huddersfield’s degree apprenticeship success rate in this year's Department for Education figures as a key factor in the award, alongside the scale of the University’s apprenticeship operation and its Outstanding Ofsted rating.

They were also impressed by the potential of the University’s National Health Innovation Campus to make a positive impact not only for apprentices but also as a community resource and a facility that benefits students across a range of programmes.

Alastair McCall, Editor of the Daily Mail University Guide, commented that the University had made a huge impact in the sector.

He added: "Huddersfield offers exceptional degree apprenticeship opportunities to students. No other university delivers such exceptional outcomes for its apprentices on the same scale as Huddersfield – last year 88% achieved their apprenticeships across provision that spans 11 programmes and around 800 students.

"The Daily Mail’s new award for University of the Year for Degree Apprenticeships was introduced to recognise the contribution made by these earn-while-you-learn degrees in opening up higher education to the widest audience, offering a debt free route to a university degree, income while studying, and a job at the end of it all."
