If you know someone with a dream career in mind, but they haven't got the usual qualifications to study it at degree level, it doesn't mean it's not going to happen for them.

Many people opt for an extended or foundation degree. These courses allow students to gain a qualification and UCAS points, giving them the option to progress on to an undergraduate degree in their chosen subject.

For example, our Science Extended Degree (SED) is designed to give students a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, physics, and maths, preparing them for a range of science-based degrees. It's ideal for someone who is passionate about science but needs to build their knowledge before specialising in a degree area.

Students may progress onto a wide range of undergraduate science degrees, including Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Forensic Science, Optometry, and Pharmacy. Other options include health science or professional degrees such as Diagnostic Radiography, Midwifery, or Law (all are subject to specific entry requirements, and an interview may be required).

A careers dashboard which gives students a clear view of where their degree can take them, has led to Huddersfield being named the Future-Ready University in the Springpod Impact Awards 2026.

Graduate Career Explorer is an intuitive tool that uses AI to help students explore the breadth of careers their degree can lead to and where those jobs are geographically. It can help students easily widen their options, see which job titles to use in their career search and to weigh up the benefits of commuting.

The resource was developed by the University's Careers and Employability Service and Planning in partnership with Lightcast, a leader in labour market analytics, with support from colleagues across the University’s Schools.

The award submission emphasised the collective commitment across the University to support students’ employability, and in particular highlighted the role of Senior Planning Analyst Ben Hull, who invented Graduate Career Explorer.

Ben realised the University could make use of the labour market intelligence data from Lightcast to create a dashboard showing students graduate job adverts filtered by degree relevance and mapped to any local authority in the UK.

In 2025/26, the dashboard reached more than 4,000 students through the University's employability award and careers education.

Springpod is an early careers platform that helps young people explore education and career pathways. Its Impact Awards celebrate employers, universities and individuals that are making an outstanding contribution to preparing young people for the world of work.

Today marks the 99th anniversary of the birth of Daphne Steele, the UK’s first black matron and the namesake of the inaugural building on our National Health Innovation Campus.

Daphne, who emigrated to the UK from Guyana in the 1940s, was a true pioneer of healthcare, renowned for her expertise, care and compassion.

It is those principles we hope our students carry with them as they become experts in their subjects, and take that newfound knowledge into the world.

The Daphne Steele Building features state-of-the-art facilities for our Midwifery, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Operating Department Practice, Paramedic Science, Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Speech and Language Therapy courses.

The large atrium of the building features a photograph of Daphne and a reminder of the qualities she bought to the NHS and those she cared for.

We're delighted to share that the University has performed strongly in the latest Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) results!

"Huddersfield was one of only a small number of universities that offered a Professional Policing course, so I did some research online and from that I felt that I would love it here. The website showed off the University in such a positive light and I loved the opportunities that it showed that I could have."

Alongside her course, Phoebe is loving representing the University as a student ambassador, playing for the women's football team, the support from the academic skills and wellbeing teams, as well as some of the most affordable student accommodation in the country, with free access to a gym, cinema, games room and study area.

A University professor who supported the development of an electric bike-sharing scheme in his hometown of Drama, Greece, has received an award recognising his contribution to sustainable transport research.

Alexandros Nikitas, a Professor of Sustainable Transport Futures, received the CYCLOPS Award for the Distinguished Scientist of Drama 2026, at a ceremony held in the city.

Prof Nikitas has also translated his research into community-level interventions. These include the Walking School Buses of Kalampaki, which he developed in collaboration with local partners to encourage children to travel to school actively, safely and sustainably.
