🦜 World Parrot Day – 31st May 🦜
Today, we celebrate World Parrot Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of parrots, their conservation, welfare, and the challenges many species face both in the wild and in captivity.
Parrots are among the most intelligent birds in the world. Many species can solve complex problems, learn words and sounds, and form strong social bonds with both humans and other birds. Their intelligence and personalities make them fascinating companions—but they are not pets to be taken on lightly.
Many parrot species are a lifelong commitment, with some living for decades. African Greys, Amazons, and Macaws can commonly live 40–60 years or more, meaning they may outlive their owners.
Parrots require:✅ Large, appropriately sized enclosures with opportunities for exercise and flight✅ Daily mental stimulation and enrichment to prevent boredom✅ A balanced, species-appropriate diet✅ Regular social interaction and companionship✅ Access to specialist veterinary care
Without the correct environment and care, parrots can develop behavioural and health problems, highlighting the importance of thorough research before bringing one home.
This World Parrot Day, let's celebrate these incredible animals while recognising the responsibility that comes with their care.
