Last week our second year medicinal chemists took part in a drug design exercise, starting with a lead analogue and going through iterative rounds of modification to hopefully produce a drug with nanomolar activity! They probed the structure-activity relationship, sought out improved binding, and looked to improve properties like logP. They all engaged wonderfully in the process, which is designed to mimic real drug discovery teamwork, and we look forward to reading the work that they submit! 💊🥼

Another student paper for one of our fabulous current cohort of MChems! Ellie completed a placement at Sheffield over the summer, funded by the Wellcome Trust, and the results of her hard work have just been published. Well done, Ellie!

Your research getting published is always exciting, but particularly so when that hard-work was all done as part of THIRD YEAR research project! Marley Knight impressed us all last year, but turns out he also impressed the fine folks at the Journal of Physics and Chemistry of Minerals as they published his work on the hydrothermal synthesis and formation of a synthetic analogue of reichenbachite last month!

Last week our twin NMR spectrometers, Bert & Ernie, we're very busy! Our third year projects were finishing up their final analyses 🟡 and our second years were being introduced to phosphorus NMR 🔴

Wonderful for our students to get hands on access to our instruments, but the clean up of all those NMR tubes for our tech team is slightly less wonderful... 🤭

This morning our third year project labs had a very special visitor when the VC came to see what our students have been working on this year. Kevin spoke to students researching topics from anti-malarial drugs to coordination chemistry, from anti-inflammatory mediators to water contamination, and lots more in between!

Thanks for dropping by, Kevin. We hope to see you again soon!

Our second years discovered the beauty of inorganic chemistry this week. They experimented with changing the molecules bound to rhodium atoms to see how this affects the electronic structure of the metal, leading to some stunning colours! 🌈

Some lovely news for a Friday - HyDEX has won the Best Place-Based Initiative at the UK Knowledge Exchange Awards in Salford last night! Pictured with the award are Peter Matthews (Keele), Upul Wijayantha (Cranfield), Charlie Creissen (Keele) and Nick King (ERA), as well as Charlie next to the green-hydrogen-powered Toyota that Charlie and Pete drove to the ceremony.

Congratulations to everyone involved in HyDEX, and especially to our colleagues Charlie, Peter, and Raphael for their fantastic contributions creating a new hydrogen economy in the Midlands.

We are thrilled to share the Keele Chemistry staff that are deserved winners of 2025 Keele Excellence Awards.

The Keele Excellence Awards celebrate excellence, innovation, and outstanding contributions from staff who inspire learners and colleagues.

Chloe Harold won the Inspiring and Innovative Teaching category for her work implementing OneNote portfolios to our courses - something that has been adopted at numerous other universities as a result of Chloe's dissemination, leadership, and support for colleagues across institutions.

Chloe Harold (her 2nd award!) and Graeme Jones, along with our colleague Ellen Deighton from student services, won the Outstanding Student Experience category for their efforts supporting our students with additional needs. Their coordination and dedication has made our courses more inclusive for all.

Massive congratulations to you all - well deserved!

Something new in our third year project labs today! Adrian is investigating food fraud, specifically adulteration of processed herbs and spices. Today he's looking at oregano and is making the lab smell better than it ever has!
