Less than a month to go until the 2026 annual conference of the European Association for Forensic Entomology! This year it is not only being hosted at Keele University (by organiser Dr Falko Drijfhout) for the first time, but this will also be the only time the conference has been physically held in the UK outside of London!

While abstract submissions have closed, there is still time to register to attend, including spaces to the workshop on cuticular hydrocarbon analysis from insects.

This is an amazing opportunity to gather the world's leading Forensic Entomologists at while the weather is lovely and campus is prime for exploring! This is also a great chance for any of our current students to easily attend this international conference.

Registration details can be found here: https://eafe.online/eafe-22nd-meeting/

Pint of Science UK post part 2!

As promised in our post last week we had one more talk coming, this one by PhD researcher and demonstrator Olga Nechyparenka who spoke about and at Tom's Tap and Brewhouse in Crewe.

Speaking alongside colleagues from , , and our school, Olga also got to have a tour of the brewery!

An important annual tradition at Keele University is the Expert Witness Report and Court Assessments.

Over the course of 2 weeks, on our Crime Scene to Court (third year ) and Major Scene Investigation ( ) our students produce a professional expert witness statement which they then defend in a real life simulation in our court room in capacity as a reporting forensic scientist.

The simulation sees our staff come to together to work as judge, prosecution, defence, and usher court staff to give all our students an authentic first experience of presenting in court. Its an important but stressful assessment, so we're extremely proud of all out students who have now completed their courts!

This week our team have been presenting, attending, and running Pint of Science UK events all over Newcastle, Nantwich, and Crewe!

On Monday Charlie Pilbeam-Bailey and Chris Aris presented at Nantwich Museum for the inaugural in Nantwich. Last night Sue Shemilt and Ela Karadia, and Jamie Pringle and Ellie Scott presented at Mellards Bar in Newcastle. Then tonight Olga Nechyparenka will be presenting at Tom's Tap in Crewe.

It is always great to get involved with public outreach and events like this, and amazing to be able to engage with the public about all things in our local area and communities. This year including mini , , , and , as well as all the amazing talks from our colleagues at Keele University across , , , , and .

Looks like tickets to the last talks tonight are sold out! So you'll just have to join us across Cheshire and Staffordshire next year for a whole new batch of talks!

Last week it our pleasure to have Vice Chancellor Kevin Shakesheff visit our school and our labs across the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences last week. We were delighted to show him around our and research labs, and show how we integrate student learning and projects into our world leading research in the field of .

Here Professor Shakesheff is pictured with our Pro Vice-Chancellor Executive Dean Anna Meredith in Dr Charles Creissen’s laboratory - found just next door to the forensic biology and labs!

Recently we were delighted to host Dr Marie Weale, a semi-regular visiting researcher to Keele University and a long term collaborator with our research team.

Marie was visiting us all the way from the Isle of Man and Manx National Heritage. During her visit our researchers were involved with scanning a series of neonate skeletal remains in order to help identify evidence of historic health and disease. She was also here to prepare a number of sample for histological analysis in our research lab.

Next steps will include comparing the two forms of visual analysis to create health timelines for the remains, as well as working to 3D print life-sized and scaled up replicas of the remains. These prints will be used to expand our here at , and to create exhibits back in Manx.

Was amazing to have Marie back with us, and great to see our collaborators with the Isle of Man go from strength to strength!

As a part of our Conference, but separate from the formal assessment part, the conference coordinators and our Head of School Professor Tasnim Munshi award a few 'Head of School Choice Awards' to those poster that are the most eye-catching and suited to a external academic conference. Between 3-5 awards are given each year across posters spanning different areas of .

This year it was incredibly hard to narrow down the awardees from a shortlist of a dozen excellent posters, but eventually we settled on three. So congratulations to:

Tiana Warburton - Poster Title: 'Beyond the Flat Lines: Evaluating the Effect of a 1:12 Scale 3D Miniature Model on Spatial Encoding and Crime Scene Sketch Accuracy'

Logan Gahan - Poster Title: 'Can Luminol Chemiluminescence Accurately Match Latent Bloodstains to their Original Patterns after Laundering?'

Cas Redfern - Poster Title: 'Soft Tissue Trauma: Creating Sustainable and Ethical ways to Investigate Predation Marks on Soft Tissue'

Awardees this year got a certificate to commemorate their achievement, and also a 3D printed keychain and themed standee courtesy of Charlie Pilbeam-Bailey and the 3D printer!

Huge congratulations again to all three of you!

While it may have got a little colder on campus over the last few days, some of our team have been afield in the sun!

Dr Adam Jeffery, our Lecturer in Forensic Geoscience, has just attended by invitation the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2026 in Vienna. He attended as an invited panel member on a short course entitled: How to Navigate EGU as a Neurodivergent Participant, and as an invited member of a 2 day EDI workshop in Scientific Excellence, Diversity and Inclusion in the Geosciences.

Adam has also recently been selected as our new co-chair of the EDI Committee, Keele School of Chemistry and Physical Sciences, so amazing to see his work being recognised both locally and internationally!

For change the weather was on our side in the UK as our MSc students conducted this year's mass grave excavation exercise in the lovely sun!

Over a week-long fieldwork activity led by Dr Vivienne Heaton our students got to practice their and search skills in a practical simulation. This included locating the remains of several individuals, planning and conducting the excavation, and analysing the remains in the lab - all in a highly realistic and demanding full case flow scenario.

This exercise is a huge collaborative effort, drawing on expertise from across experts Keele University to show the interdisciplinary nature of this type of casework. Collaborators this year included Drs Jamie Pringle and Kristopher Wisniewski who led the search elements, Dr Adam Jeffery who covered geoforensic trace evidence, and Professor Charlene Greenwood who introduced the students to advanced analytical methods.. But perhaps most important was Charlotte Loy our distraught German civilian!

Recently we hosted a group of Public Services students from Macclesfield College at Keele University.

Their students got to work across our laboratory facilities and crime scene simulation centre to conduct a realistic . Under the guidance of our lecturers and demonstrators they got to gather evidence, analyse data just as they would in a professional setting. This included fingerprinting and footprint casting, hair fibre analysis, and mapping and reporting.

We were delighted to be able to contribute to the students' Crime Scene Investigation unit and help bring to life for them! We hope to see you all again soon!
