Keele University: Media, Communication & Culture

Keele University: Media, Communication & Culture Media is a dynamic course combining practical and theoretical elements offered by the School of Humanities at Keele University.

Media at Keele University is a dynamic course, which involves both practical and theoretical elements. On the practical side, students learn how to make news programmes, the skills of digital photography, and documentary-programme making, as well as reflecting on these practices. On the theory side, students explore the ways in which we understand the terms media and culture both today and histori

cally, and analyse how a range of media forms such as film, television, photography and literature produce cultural meaning. The media dominates our lives now and on the programme students critically examine the effects of mass communication, the Internet and digital media. The course also considers how individual and cultural identities are formed, what power audiences and media practitioners have, as well as issues such as censorship, globalisation, and ideology. Media is truly interdisciplinary, bringing together academics with expertise in Cultural Studies and experience in media industries.

The Creative Rural: Transdisciplinary Engagements with Landscape

Creative practitioners working on socio-ecological themes constitute an important group of citizens who are trying to mediate the rapid set of transitions demanded of rural places. This project seeks to better understand the conditions under which they work, the challenges that they are experiencing, and the contributions they are making to the development of sustainable rural futures.

What do rural creative practitioners gain from, and give back to, their location and community? What are the challenges experienced by creative practitioners working in the rural as they seek to navigate intersections between creative practice, community participation and scientific knowledge?
How can creative practitioners working in the rural be best supported to engage with policymakers, to foster greater support for the crucial role of artistic practice in essential dialogue, translation and shared knowledge generation?

(from Pawas Bisht)

Exciting start to 2024! Delighted to draw on my media storytelling expertise to contribute to the national conversation about the extraordinary impact of ITV drama 'Mr Bates vs. The Post Office'. Interviewed yesterday by Toni McDonald for BBC Radio Stoke, BBC Radio Shropshire, and BBC Radio Hereford & Worcester. Interview also featured on BBC Radio Cornwall this morning. Listen using the link below (segment starts 3:20:00).

News reporting about the Post-Office Horizon IT scandal over the past few years had failed to generate public engagement and outrage. Why is it that a TV drama adaptation of the same events has struck such a powerful chord with the nation?

Carefully crafted storytelling that makes use of powerful characters, archetypal plotting and a hopeful emotionally resonant narrative restoring people's faith in justice and moral good is the reason behind the show's success.

Great to be able to make connections to my research at Keele University on environmental storytelling and the need for powerful and hopeful storytelling to generate public engagement with the climate crisis.

What you need to know where you live on a Wonderful Wednesday with Toni.
